HOW U CRUISIN!? ~ Explorer 5-night Bermuda June 18-23

Recommended Posts

Just returned from the Explorer of the Seas 5-night to Bermuda, so I thought that I would share some thoughts and comments as to the trip itself and then answer any questions you may have, as I know I did before the cruise.

Embarkation: We arrived to the Cape Liberty I believe a little after 10 and by the time we dropped the luggage off and parked the car it was nearer 10:30. Security was a breeze and then we went to the waiting area for a little while before they started check in, which was started off by the wedding parties that were boarding, but the process was fast. We then waited after we checked in til about 11:30 to actually get on the busses and board. On the Explorer you board from deck 1, unlike many other ships where you board on Deck 4.

Food: The Explorer was by far one of the best ships for food. We did not have one bad meal. It seems that Royal changed the lunch menu since February when I sailed last, they added many good entrees and desserts for lunch. I also experienced a new dinner menu one night with a red seafood pasta and cornmeal encrusted tilapia. The formal night was on day 2 and the lobster night was day 4. They also had the chocolate breakfast on day 5 and the pool buffet was on day 3 after the love and marriage show.

Ship: I know that the ship is nearing 11 years old, and overall it is in very good shape, but there are some wear and tear and cleaning spots that they need to attend to. Walking back to the ship from Bermuda you can tell the ship needed paint touchups in some area, but I did not see any of this take place. Usually there are always people out there touching up some areas. Carpets were clean and the stateroom was in tip top condition.

Entertainment: Jimmy Rhodes, the cruise director, definitely gets props for this area. I think that he is one of the best cruise directors Royal employs, only under Richard Spacey. Jimmy and his partner Jacinta were fabulous. They both had a lot of energy and put on great shows. Their morning show was entitled How U Cruisin?! and he encouraged everybody, when they saw him around the ship, to say that to him. Speaking of seeing him around the ship, he was a very visible CD, others in the past not so much. His Quest was the best Quest we've been too in all of the years of going to that show, unfortunately our team did not win.

Additionally, the shows were very good. Day 2 was the Production Show "Wild, Cool, & Swingin" which was good but not as good as previous ones from other ships. Day 3 was a Headliner Show, action comedy of Rick Novell, who did juggling and that sort of thing. Day 4 was the Production show "Invitation to Dance" choreographed by Louis Van Amstel from Dancing with the Stars, and this show is not to miss. It was great, especially the ballroom couple. The ice show, Spirit of the Seasons was also excellent, and it was offered on Day 2 and 3pm and 5pm and Day 5 at 3pm and 5pm. (Diamonds and above did not need tickets for Day 5 at 3pm)

Bermuda: This was our first time to Bermuda, and I guess I had too high hopes for it, because it sort of was a let down. Monday June 20th was a national holiday (national heroes day) in Bermuda, so most of the shops were closed, and of course, caused transportation delays. It took us 2 hrs to get from the ship to Horseshoe Bay Beach. The line for the bus straight there was extremely long, so we took the ferry (also having a long line) to Hamilton, and then walked to the Bus terminal and waited an additional 30 mins for a bus to Horseshoe there. We did not have any trouble getting back to the ship. The next day we took a very to St. George, and it was a very nice ride, although they don't leave you much time to explore if you want to make it back. I did the free walking tour, which was excellent and very informative about the island followed by the wench dunking, a real hoot. Then took the ferry back and ate at the Frog and Onion pub, good soup and fish and chips, and did some shopping around the dockyard. The glassblowing is nice to see and the rum cake sampling was very yummy.

Weather: This was a huge disappointment for us. The first sea day it was rainy and overcast all day. On the first Bermuda day, since it was a holiday we had no other choice but to go to the beach, but it was again overcast. The sun was trying to peak for a few minutes. The second Bermuda day was nice, but partly cloudy. And finally the last day we had great weather cruising back to Bayonne, it was nice to get some sun.

Debarkation: Explorer definitely wins here compared to all other ships. They really need to take a lesson from Explorer. The waiting areas and tags were nicely spaced out, Diamonds waited in the theater and they were even a half hour early with calling the number. We were escorted down on the elevator from deck 3 to deck 1 and walked right off, no line. There was a guy in the elevator that ran it, a very good idea and I think they did this in most of the debarkation elevators. We then took the short bus ride to the terminal and found luggage right away and walked right through customs, very very easy.

Overall we had a very nice Bermuda vacation, with a little bump in the road from the holiday and weather, but we dealt and had a great time.

Any questions I will be more than happy to answer them.

On the first night they were giving ice show tickets out, I believe around 7:45, but we did not get them because we were going to just go during the Diamond show. But then the weather was bad so we went down to the desk in the afternoon on day 2 and they had 1 left for 3pm and many left for 5pm, so we did that.

No problem with overspray in Bayonne...I was worried about that and saw many cars with covers, but no problem thankfully!

And we did not eat at Portofinos, however our tablemates did eat there on day 4 (lobster night, they didn't know it) and they loved it. They said it was a lot quieter and relaxing and they really enjoyed it!

I would also like to add that they are very lax on the dining attire now. Shorts were permitted in the main dining room for dinner and there were very many who chose to do this.

cot427, my husband and I were on the same sailing. I agree with your reivew 100%.

We made the best of the weather and fortunately, I had scheduled a private tour on Monday so we did get to see a lot of the island. My DH wasn't sure that he wanted to do this, but just told me he was really glad that I didn't listen to him.:D

How did you enjoy the ride back to Bayonne? Just a little bumpy wouldn't you say? Thank heaven for the last sea day. Loved the sun that day and the smooth seas.

Yes, the ride back to Bayonne was bumpy, especially at night. Didn't make me sick though, nothing could be worse than the Carnival Splendor on the Pacific Ocean. That ship rocked 10x worse. And that last sea day was awesome. It was the perfect day which was unexpected. I got some sun to bring back home with me and the ship just glided through the ocean!

I would like to go to Bermuda in the near future, can you tell me was it bermuda itself that was disappointing or just the fact that the weather/holiday wasn't very good. Was the island nice and plenty to do, etc, what was your itinerary exactly?

Bermuda in itself was a very nice island, unlike many of the Caribbean islands. It was very clean and vendors did not harass you to buy their wears. The weather and the holiday did affect my disappointment in Bermuda, but additionally the transportation did as well. I did not enjoy the place where the ship docked, which is a significant distance from everything. Smaller ships dock right in Hamilton and St. George, and that would be ideal, but I would rather cruise the larger ships, so what's that leave.

But, everybody should see Bermuda and judge it for themselves. Most people absolutely love Bermuda.

OP, did you have to show your passports before disembarking in Bermuda or at any time in Bermuda, or did you only show them when boarding in Bayonne and then again when disembarking in Bayonne?

Thank you for the great review. We are taking this cruise next Saturday!

Just back from Bermuda June 16. I agree with you completely, Bermuda was a big disappointment. Our weather was the same as yours rain and cloudy every day. Our transportation problems were the same and there is nothing at the Dockyard as you said. Our trip to and from Baltimore was the roughest we have ever felt in 7 cruises. I guess weather is the main reason we were disappointed but we will never return to Bermuda. Eating and drinking in Bermuda is very expensive. Shopping not very cheap either. I think that the vendors and their crafts is what we missed. Shopping in Hamilton is just like shopping in any other town or city or beach area in the US. Then you have to wait in a long line to get back by bus or ferry.

Just wanted to add another viewpoint here! ;) My husband and I were also on the 6/18-23 Explorer cruise to Bermuda. It was my 3rd visit to Bermuda and hubby's 2nd. We had a fantastic time! We love Bermuda and especially love docking at King's Wharf (and I have been at all 3 ports).

I think the Dockyard is the loveliest of the 3 Bermuda ports, and we always find plenty to do there (plenty of shops, the Maritime Museum and Commissioners house tour, swim with the dolphins, segway tours, glass-blowing, pottery shops, rum cake tasting (I tasted a LOT of rum cake this time), snorkel park, restaurants, art galleries, craft shops, etc., etc.,) We enjoy just walking all around the old buildings of the original Royal Naval Dockyard too, and taking in the historic beauty of the area. I am not overly fond of Hamilton, because to me it is just another city, but I do love the historical quaintness of St. George and was happy to spend a little time there on this most recent cruise. And Bermuda's beaches are always awesome!

Usually we rely on Bermuda's formerly exceptional public transportation system, but on this trip we had read about the recent problems surrounding the bus/ferry system. So, we booked a ship excursion through Royal Caribbean instead (the Island Drive excursion) and it was fantastic!!!! We did this on day #1 in Bermuda. It was a 5-hour excursion, and covered pretty much every square inch of Bermuda. We went to Gibb's Lighthouse, drove through Hamilton, spent an hour in St. George, and saw all points between and did a bit of shopping too. :D It was a holiday, but many stores were open all over the island, because they want to reap the benefit of the influx of cruise passengers. We ended our tour with a drive past all the beautiful South Shore Beaches. Our tour guide was amazingly informative and made the entire day so much fun.

When we returned from our "Island Drive" we spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around the Dockyard enjoying all the sights and visiting the shops. We were exhausted after our long day and spent the evening on board, having cocktails in the Viking Crown Lounge, overlooking the Dockyard all lit up at night. It was really nice.

On Day #2 we took the bus straight to Horseshoe Bay and had the most amazing beach day! We strolled down the beaches, climbed rock formations, hiked down winding trails, stopped at Jobson's Cove for a secluded swim (well, secluded for a while until a few other curious swimmers arrived. ;)) Then we walked to Warwick Long Bay, which is a beautiful stretch of beach, and spent the rest of our time swimming there. Afterward, we caught the bus back to the Dockyard and strolled through the old Clocktower shops one last time before boarding the ship for our sail-away. We are not big shoppers though and usually only purchase items that would be representative of that particular island. I purchased a bottle of exquisite Bermuda Perfume, made right on the island. It smells heavenly!

So, all-in-all we had an amazing visit to Bermuda. The weather was overcast and windy throughout the beginning of our trip, but it did not impair our ability to enjoy ourselves in any way. Day #2 in Bermuda was sunny and mild though, with much calmer breezes....perfect beach weather! :D Our last day at sea was also nice, with sunshine.

This was my 4th time sailing on Explorer. I was on her in her inaugural year and overall, I would say she is still in pretty good shape. I agree she could use a little paint here and there. I loved all the shows and was happy that they have actually changed the productions since the last time I sailed on Explorer (including a new Ice Show), so I was able to see some new shows instead of seeing the old ones for the 4th time. :p

We did "My Time" dining and it worked great for us. We just showed up and were seated immediately, at a table for two, every night. We had the same wait staff each night and they were fantastic! No complaints on food or service in the dining room! Our cabin steward was a different story though. We constantly had to leave notes for her, reminding her to do things that should have been done automatically...like replacing the empty tissue box, supplying a back-up roll of toilet paper when the primary roll is almost gone, keeping our open wine bottles iced, etc... Just minor annoyances, nothing that dampened our overall cruise experience.

Oh, about the parking at Bayonne. I have had the misfortune of having my car "over-sprayed" with paint there on a past cruise. So this time we purchased an inexpensive car cover and returned to a nice, clean car. But, I did notice that the car parked beside us had what appeared to be a coating of some sort. It wasn't paint though, as I could wipe it off with my hands, but it seemed as if it was residue from sandblasting in the area. We were parked almost as close to the dry-dock area as you can get, and there WAS a ship in the dry-dock all week. I guess maybe it got sandblasted while we were away and the strong wind blew the residual particulates across the parking lot, leaving a covering of "dust" on some of the cars. Not anything that should cause any damage though. :)

Thank you for the great review. We are taking this cruise next Saturday!

When going back onto the ship in Bermuda you have to show a gov't photo id, such as a passport or drivers license. Going back to the ship two times, I saw a mixture of each.

I'm glad you had a great time!! Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved the Explorer, still a great ship. Food and service were both extraordinary and the ship was still in pretty good shape. Entertainment was top notch. I just didn't enjoy Bermuda as well as I thought I would. Like you, if we did a tour on day 1 and beach on day 2, we would have enjoyed ourselves more. Day 2 was the nicer, more beachy weather and day 1 was a tour day, but we planned the opposite, so we were stuck.

It is really a shame that the Captain and Cruise Director kept encouraging people to go to the beach on day#1 instead of suggesting they actually tour the island and see the sights, and save the beach for day#2! The weather on day #1 was actually perfect for our island tour, and there were tons of stores in Hamilton AND St. George that were open for the folks who just wanted to shop. RCCL really missed the mark on that account in my opinion! I bet there are many folks, like yourself, that left Bermuda feeling disappointed. I am sorry for all of you :( I too would have been disappointed had I done my itinerary on the reverse days if it was my only visit to Bermuda!

Thanks for this review (and the comments from fellow cruisers)! We will be on this cruise in a couple of weeks, so it's very helpful!

Bonnie Voyager - if you have a sec, we are seriously considering the Segway tour. We are traveling with our two teens and the Segway tour we did with them in Chicago was the hit of the week! Have you done this before or were you just mentioning it as an option? I read the ad on a Kings Wharf site and it sounds like a lot of historical stuff, but also sounds like it could be a nice way to check out the area. Thoughts?

OP, I was so happy to hear that the food, and the CD, are both good. I can't wait!!!

Thanks for all the good ideas of things to do in Bermuda. We will be on the 9 night cruise in April so we will only have 1 day in Bermuda. I am a little concerned about the weather at that time. I would love to swim with the dolphins but I am thinking it may be too cold. The segway tour sounds really good and might be better for that time of year. Do you have a any info on segways and dolphins?

Thanks,

Yes everybody was encouraging to do Bermuda this way. First the port and shopping tour, then the cruise director, captain, and even the waiters. So of course after all of these people say this, we are going to do it, as I'm sure many others did.

Did they do the Quest show on your 5 night sailing?

The quest on Explorer with Jimmy Rhodes is not to be missed. In my opinion it is one on of the best, if not the best quest there is!

Any chance you are on the 16th of July sailing? I used to check the roll call forum but the last post was weeks ago, and there weren't many posts on it then. Maybe we will have the ship to ourselves? We are two couples in our 50's and our 20 year old daughter. We are thinking of the night time Bermuda Triangle Glass Bottom Boat excursion-depends on how brave we get! :D We have been debating what time we should get to the pier. Seems like there are arguments for both sides, early, later-the TA told my friend we should not get there before 1pm, but that seems late to me. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the links. The dolphins are EXPENSIVE but I am sure it is worth it. The Segway says you have to call or e-mail to get prices. Would you mind telling me how long your segway tour was and how much so I have an idea what to expect?

Thanks,

We arrived at the pier at about 10:45a.m. and were on board eating lunch around noon. :-)

I did not do the Segway tour myself, but I watched as the folks who DID take the tour, did their "training" session near the ship. They all (young and old) looked like they were having a great time! :D I believe the tour is about 90 minutes and costs around $80.
