Ship upgrades, How often, When?

Out of curiosity, is there a typical amount of time (5 years, 10 years) before a ship goes into dry dock for a makeover?

It has to be hard to decide which boats get upgrades when. Plus people always get more excited about new ships. So how much do you sink into the older ones?

Are the upgrades usually just new paint and carpet or more substantial things? I am guessing the cruise lines want to provide the latest trends but also have to figure out what trends will last and what will fizzle out.

I enjoyed seeing the photos and video of the recent RCCL ship that was in dock. I hope to see a lot more of this stuff on Cruise Critic.

I'm curoius about this too! I'm going on the Carnival Triumph in November and it is supossed to be dry docked around October so I'm wondering what will be different once it's done...? From the looks of it, it seems like it's every 5 years or so they do this....
