Best beach with shade

We have never been to St. Thomas before or the Caribbean for that matter. We have always cruised the Mexican Riviera. This time we are excited to try the Eastern Caribbean itinerary on the Carnival Liberty.

The only problem I need to work around is that I have a sensitivity to too much sun.

Can anyone recommend a beach in St. Thomas that offers shady areas?

We are going to HMC, St. Thomas, San Juan and Grand Turk.

I have a cabana reserved at HMC...but am not too sure about the other ports.

Any recommendations?

I agree--try Sapphire Beach! Lots of "free" shade under the trees. $10 per person each way by taxi, $7 beach chairs, $10 snorkel gear. Not much to eat there but I think they had a few snacks.

Don't forget Secret Harbor, which does have good food some shade and umbrellas. http://www.secretharbourvi.com Also a bit closer to Havensight.

Sapphire is great for natural shade and I agree, great snorkeling. We are going back again next spring when on Oasis.

We also loved Sapphire. There was a girl on the beach getting drinks and food for people. We had drinks, mahi sandwiches and a burger. It was all very good.

Magen's Bay has shade under their pavilion - beautiful beach and no tide!

Sapphire is NE of the port, north of Red Hook (the ferry that takes you to St. John) and Magens Bay is on the west end of the island.
