Carry Passport into Bethlehem?

I have read on an older post that passengers must carry their passport to cross into Bethlehem from Israel. If this is true I want to be able to give this important info to fellow passengers on our tour in September. We are touring with Guided Tours Israel.

I just did this in March 2011, while on a land trip to Israel. Yes, you MUST have your passport with you. But if I am not mistaken, you must have it with you the entire time you are in Israel from a cruise ship anyway. (At least that is what I remember from my cruise stop there in September 2010).
