Grandeur drydock ?

Recommended Posts

We were on Grandeur a couple of weeks ago and they said they would be adding a speciality restaurant and a Concierge lounge. Hopefully they're also sprucing up all the rusty bits and broken doors and ceilings.

Thanks! We are taking her out of Venice for 11 nights in July and we were a little apprehensive about an older ship and not having some of the above mentioned upgrades,Well I can put our concerns to bed.

A one month dry-dock is longer then usual right?

We are just off Grandeur on back to back. Had a great time but it could do with upgrading in places. Lovely ship.:)

We were on 17th July Spanish Med on Grandeur. Had a great time. Ship is a little tired but the staff are great and the food was good. Only downsides are the toilets - spent so much time waiting for that flush to happen:eek: (and we were on deck 3) and the farce about the shuttles - charging $10 each return (or $25 for the three shuttles) and then finding out that there was local transport at a fraction of the price - very annoying and unnecessary - they could build the cost of the shuttles into the cruise price and no-one would even know and then they could offer free shuttles. When I am visiting a port of call, I do not want to be offloaded in a ghastly dock area and then be forced to pay an exhorbitant price for a short shuttle ride, because the cruise company chooses not to tell me of the local transport available. Also agree about the formal (or not so formal) evenings - we also saw shorts and ripped jeans in the dining room on formal nights.

Also, be aware they are adding rooms and if it is anything like the Rhapsody the Deck 8 aft room numbers changed. So those with the Aft rooms keep an eye on the deck plans.

We just returned yesterday on the Grandeur repositioning from Colon, Panama to Miami where there were only 690+ cruisers on board. Ship felt eerily empty at times which was a good thing especially if crowds sometimes overwhelm you. Ship is now on its final transatlantic voyage to Europe where it will be going into drydock in Palma de Mallorca for 20 days.

While we had a great cruise and JS cabin (center aft) on the Grandeur, she is in dire need of maintenance. Lots of rust, wear and tear and tiredness. Sliding doors were often inoperable and had to be pried open, lounge chairs on the balcony had multiple missing straps, phones were obsolete and reminiscent of the rotaries, missing alarm clock, rug stains, outdated room decor and bathroom tile, etc.

Upsides. We actually liked the atrium-like Centrum and in some ways, preferred it over the Promenade. It was a great, central place where there were always people dancing. Staff and entertainment were superb. We also liked the spacious Palladium theater.

MDR food was just that, MDR food. Our waiter told us that it was Chops that was being put into the Grandeur. He also mentioned another restaurant being put in but cant recall which. (Maybe a Park Cafe up on the pool deck somewhere?)

Spanish-immersion aspect of the cruise also made things very interesting as the majority of cruisers were non-English speaking. We enjoyed the Spanish 101 class that was a part of the schedule.

All in all, and despite the obvious appearance and maintenance issues, we had a great cruising experience on the Grandeur. The facelift will make her beautiful.
