Seamo Posted July 27, 2011 #1 Share Posted July 27, 2011 Hello NCL cruisers, We are booking Epic Barcelona to Miami Oct/2012. Doing our research, we read many critiques on the smoke odors in Cabins. A result of relaxed smoke policy. It is our understanding that on Epic: 1).One side is smoking ... in ... cabins + balconies. and ... No smoke other side. True? 2).No Smoke in public areas but allowed in Casino and designated zones. 3).Physican certified "Migraine" sufferer. Smoke will destroy this trip for one of us ... should we cancel ...??? This would be our virgin experience with NCL and EPIC. Really want to do this but ... very ... concerned as we have experienced the unfortunate destruction of a trip when the "Brain" goes "tight fist". Please, this is not about good smoke/bad smoke ... just a request for the lastest info from you folks who would know what is happening with the Epic ... Thanks a ton, wanting to get aboard the Epic to: ... :)Seamo:)
Why Knot Me Posted July 27, 2011 #2 Share Posted July 27, 2011 Hello NCL cruisers, We are booking Epic Barcelona to Miami Oct/2012. Doing our research, we read many critiques on the smoke odors in Cabins. A result of relaxed smoke policy. It is our understanding that on Epic: 1).One side is smoking ... in ... cabins + balconies. and ... No smoke other side. True? False 2).No Smoke in public areas but allowed in Casino and designated zones. True 3).Physican certified "Migraine" sufferer. Smoke will destroy this trip for one of us ... should we cancel ...??? Only you can decide. I've been on the Epic twice and never had a problem with smoke even in the Casino. Others complain about it. If your cabin has an odor, your room steward can place a machine in your room to help the problem but I don't know if that would help with your sensitivity. This would be our virgin experience with NCL and EPIC. Really want to do this but ... very ... concerned as we have experienced the unfortunate destruction of a trip when the "Brain" goes "tight fist". Single Cruiser Posted July 27, 2011 #3 Share Posted July 27, 2011 I had no problem with Smoke indoors in Epic. The only problem was smoking at the outside bars. I like to sit at the bar in the shade but that's where the smokers seemed to hang out!
fsuhockette Posted July 27, 2011 #4 Share Posted July 27, 2011 We never noticed the smoke except in the Casino and that was far before the odor eaters were put in. Good luck making a decision.

klingoncruiser Posted July 28, 2011 #7 Share Posted July 28, 2011 As a non smoker, I have to say that Norwegian currently has the worst smoking policy of all the lines we go on. Smoking in the rooms, balconies and the Casino. I don't even bother going to the Casino on NCL ships as it is so nasty. Go ahead and go and find out for yourself, and wish you the best of luck with this thorny problem for all us non smokers. Sorry, but smoking really is bad on NCL. However I still go as I know what I am up against and take care to stay away from the worst areas.
RollTideRollRich Posted July 28, 2011 #8 Share Posted July 28, 2011 Epic seemed to have really good ventilation, especially in the Casino area. I went through several times and never was bombarded with a big smoke cloud or anything of the such.
corey07850 Posted July 28, 2011 #9 Share Posted July 28, 2011 For what it's worth, we didn't notice any smoke at all on our Epic cruise, not even in the casino.
Rare mitsugirly Posted July 28, 2011 #10 Share Posted July 28, 2011 I didn't notice any smoke smell on the Epic when we were on it last year in the rooms or the casino. I've read multiple threads about the "things" they use to completely deodorize each room between each cruise that completely takes away the smell. :)

They answered your question but if you can't see it for some reason I'll repeat it. There is no separation sides. Smokers can be in port/Starboard cabins, balconies and deck areas! david_sobe Posted July 28, 2011 #12 Share Posted July 28, 2011 I sailed in Dec 2010 and was expecting to see lots of smoke based on threads on this board. It was Christmas week with over 4300 passengers. But I was surprised because I saw no lingering smoke. I smelled smoke in the casino and saw people smoking but there was no lingering smoke at the ceiling. They did have air purifiers running in the casino about every 50 feet. I actually was looking for smoke since I heard about it so much. Thankfully there was no lingering smoke in our cabin or anywhere else we went. You only hear about it so harshly because the protesters want you to believe it. If they see a cigarette at 300 ft they will lead you to believe that somehow that smoke is being inhaled by them. But as with your post and most honest non-smoking posters on here, it really is for the most part a non-issue. There are really very few places that smokers can smoke, so the majority of your cruise would be considered non-smoking. OP I would not suggest you get a balcony unless it is aft since yes your balcony neighbors may be smokers. Now since I've never had a balcony without some wind due to ship speed I can't see this being a big issue but some claim it is and I won't dispute what they believe. 1 HappyCruiser Posted July 28, 2011 #16 Share Posted July 28, 2011 We sail mostly Princess with a occasional trip on NCL. One of the worst smoky cabins we've ever encountered was on NCL last trip (interior cabin), but I will say it only happened one time. Now that Princess is about to limit smoking in rooms & balconies I doubt if we'll be back to NCL since more smokers will be migrating to the smoking lenient lines. Then you may be disappointed if this would be an issue for you. But at least you are forwarned by knowing the policy before you leave and can make an informed decision based on facts. NCL does not have "deluxe" cabins that must be a term that your TA is using to perhaps describe the higher priced balconies. Maybe you could ask the TA what cabin categories that apply to their non-NCL term of deluxe. Am trying to re-find the source where we read that ..[separate sided smoking rules for "in cabin smoking" ... thought it was a NCL info page ... but not sure. If it were a new thing I would think it to be a +. We do know that ... All balconies are allowed smoking , tho. ... ... Seamo :) Perhaps there was some confusion NCL does have separate side smoking areas but only on open decks. Believe me if it was a new rule it would hit CC before the ink was even dry on NCL's paper ;)
fortyseven Posted July 28, 2011 #18 Share Posted July 28, 2011 We sailed on NCL Gem last year..the truth is on European cruises there are more Europeans--and they smoke like fiends.. .we know of people who had issues with the smell of smoke on their balconies...this is true on all cruise lines here and abroad... walking past the tables on the smoking side of the ship..was unpleasant if you are a non smoker--and especially if you have allergies/asthma or other medical conditions...we never go in casino on any ship due to adverse reaction to smoke---the trouble is they plan that you have to walk through casinos to get to popular places on ship

My Wife no longer smokes at all and I am only an occaisonal light Cigar(flavored) and Pipe(Capt. Black Mild) smoker. With that said, Heavy smoke bothers me as well.... Ask your doctor about NORTRIPTALYNE(sp? the bottle isn't next to me). I take it at bedtime(3x25mg caplets) and it has cut my incidents down considerably All that being said you should not let that stop you from enjoying your cruise...
