Traveling partner may have to cancel

Hi. I am booked on the Triumph 9/1. My traveling partner just found out a family member has been diagnosed with a very aggressive disease and may not be able to come. I know this has probably been asked and answered, but since I may end up going solo, is the best way to do this is just not having her show up so I don't have to pay the single rate? TIA.

Thanks! Also, never gone solo before so I am a bit nervous about that!

I have met lots of solo cruisers on cruises... have you checked out your roll call for your sailing.. they may have a meet and greet set up... ;)

Yes, I checked it and it's almost non-existent. Also, posted there as well so I guess we'll see! Tx.

I wouldnt worry about.. go and have fun.. I went without my hubby last year and with other friends.. but I met many more friends on my own.. I loved the Casino bar... I always had one of my new friends there everytime I went by;)

We have a similar situation. My daughter and BF are booked to go on Triumph in October. Early saver fare, deposit paid, but not the final payment. Today they split up. :(

We know BF's deposit is non-refundable and non transferable; but can she keep her reservation?

Could she keep the cabin, at her fare, even if it means paying more for solo?

If she finds someone else to go, will they put that person in her cabin?

My sister cruised for the first time last year (on a different line) because one of her girlfriends was slated to cruise with her fiance and they broke up. The friend switched the name from her ex to my sister and sis covered the cost of the change but essentially got to cruise for free (well, I think the cruise had been paid for by the ex). I think a lot depends on the rate and how it was booked but it is something to look into. YMMV, of course.

She paid with AMEX points, and since I don't have an AMEX card, I'm not sure if those are transferable. Also, we booked it because I received a casino promo, so I don't know what the rules about changing names are for that category. I think it's best if she just doesn't show (since the cabin is paid for) and I'll just have to figure out the rest. All will be fine! I love to cruise so this will just be a new type of cruise adventure for me. Thanks for all the helpful replies!

Because you have the Early Saver fare, there are no name changes allowed. That doesn't mean that they charge you a fee to do it, it means that they won't do it at all. Other fares allow it after final payment for a fee, but not Early Saver. If you don't find anyone else to go, it's best to make final payment for both and just let him be a no-show. The gov't fees will be refunded. In the end, it would financially be just as if she were booked solo to begin with. If you cancel the BF, you then not only have that penalty, but also another entire cruise fare is added to the booking for the invisible 2nd person. So whatever the penalty winds up being is extra that you paid as opposed to just having him be a no-show.

If you are able to find someone else to go, the earlier, the better. In that case, cancel the BF and add the new person. Before final payment, the deposit of the BF can be applied to a future cruise (minus the $50 fee) for whomever paid the deposit. You may need to provide some kind of proof that you or she paid it, if that was the case, and I think there's a form to fill out. After the final payment date, the deposit is gone (nothing can be applied to a future cruise). Then, at different intervals, the penalty percentage increases.

Quick answers to your other questions, yes she can keep the cabin as a solo (just don't let them know she'll be solo until you show up for the cruise). And yes, if someone else can go, they can be added to her cabin. I've added people to a solo booking of mine, and I've removed a person to make another cruise a solo booking. No problem.

For the OP, if you and your friend both took out insurance, this may be covered under their policy. If so, you should cancel, then pay the solo supplement, and the insurance will pick up the cancel penalty and the solo supplement.

You cant change a name on a ES booking at all.. you lose the whole deposit.. the deposit minus the 50 can be used within one year for the person who cancelled...unless the rules have changed this is my understanding:confused:

K2 excursion, you were very helpful. I called my TA who confirmed with Carnival that we can get $150 of the ex-BF's deposit back as future cruise credit, and she can put in another traveling partner at the same ES rate. All must be done before final payment date of Aug 16. Thanks!

I would go solo in a heartbeat if I could afford it. The best trip I ever had was with a friend last year. I got to do what I wanted, when I wanted, how I wanted and met a ton of people. She did her thing and I did mine. It was a blast. One thing about a cruise ship, you are never alone. :o

What!?!?!? I thought ES was hardcore about absolutely no name changes!?!? Maybe the new person was added at 3rd person rate? Ugh.....Carnival can't follow their own policies to save their lives.

Or they are cancelling and rebooking with the $50 pp fee?

who knows how the TA came up with that.

I have gone solo 3 times for the above reasons, the 2nd pax cancelled .. not worth it to cancel and rebook and pay a penalty anyway.

Ugh?

It has nothing to do with Carnival following their own policies. It's to do with people understanding what is being done.

The person is canceling before final payment therefore his $200 deposit is being held as a future cruise credit minus $50 penalty = $150.

A new person can go into the cabin at the protected early saver rate.

If no one else goes in the cabin the original person must pay the 200% fare.
