12 day South American-Cape Horn Cruise

We are thinking about taking the above cruise around Cape Horn. We have been on many cruises and have found it very helpful to ask people who have been on the same cruise before for advice.

Can you tell us if there are any "must see" things we shouldn't miss? Is there any advise on hotels, guides or any other recommendations you can make?

Yes there are must see things you shouldn't miss. You would get better advise if you specified on what ports you are seeking advice and how many days/nights you will be in each port.

We were on a similar cruise in February. You can see lots of photos of the places we went to in our review on our website www.thepreismans.com. There are many "must see" places on a SA cruise.

If you stop at the Falklands, then take the trek to Volunteer Point to see the penguin colonies....an amazing trip and sights when you get there.

In Buenos Aires, the La Boca part of the city is a must in my opinion.There is so much to see in BA that a guide would be a good idea.

The glaciers near Ushuaia will be the highlight of the scenic cruising section.

In the Falklands you will still see Gentoos and King penguins as they stay around the Islands all year round, Best spots Bluff cove and Volunteer for them.

Puerto Montt

GV Tours: http://www.gvtours.com with some reservations like a guide who was too busy revising for her university exam to bother with a commentary unless asked and who couldn't be bothered to make a brief photo stop when asked. Also charging for coffee at the lunch stop and missing one (fairly small) section of the published itinerary without consulting us.

 

GVT seem to be well regarded so different guide, different experience?

Turismo Payne: http://www.travelagency.payne.cl/quienessomos-en.html. Very helpful, very accommodating. Ask for details on exactly where they will meet you: some guides (not TP when we used them) will want to wait outside the port gates.

 

Falkland Islands

Bluff Cove offer a well regarded tour: http://www.falklandpenguins.com/ which we missed when we couldn't get in due to the weather. We're going early next year on another trip. It doesn't need the 7 (6?) hours on the island that Volunteer Point does. If you want to see penguins try Seno Otway out of Punta Arenas. We enjoyed our visit and wouldn't have seen any if we hadn't booked both Bluff Cove and Seno Otway. If both visits materialise, that's fine. If you miss the Falklands and didn't book elsewhere...

Real English Tours: http://www.realenglishtours.com. Liz Cowley is an absolutely excellent guide. Look out for ship's time v Uruguay time. Others who joined our party failed to hear and read the many announcements, both on the day and the day before, warning that there would be an hour's difference. Liz waited very patiently, they arrived an hour late with no apology, I would have left them!

Our second most favourite cruise (Baltic #1). In addition to the cruise itself do consider a pre or post cruise trip to Iguazu Falls. It should be on everyone's bucket list.
