Walkie Talkies

We are going on the Carnival Ecstasy on October 1, 2011 and we are traveling with another couple so we thought it would be a good idea to get a set of Walkie Talkies to keep in touch. Can anyone tell me how these work on the ship and if they do work especially if you are on a different floor?

Thanks,

Suzanne

This topic has been discussed on many threads so if you want specifics try the search function. However the short answer is no. With consumer models, the signal tends to be blocked below deck by the metal structure. In open air they work ok.

We took them along on our first cruise to give it a try. Never again. Waste of luggage. They didn't work. However, I have heard that certain brands/models do work and some ppl find them useful. I guess it just depends if you want to bother packing them. For me, less is best. :)

If you want to give them a try, they're pretty inexpensive these days. Most who use them are trying to keep track of children. We have always just made breakfast plans the night before and set meeting times and places for the rest of the day from there. Post its and telephones also work great.

ITA, we took them on one trip with the kids. They worked fine, but we only used them once. I thought they were a waste of luggage space that could have been taken up by duct tape, post it notes, John Deere key chains and bungee cords!

Good ones work fairly well, but aren't cheap. Do you really need to be in such close contact? I'm picturing the 2 couples not even using them after the first afternoon.

If you bring them just be considerate in where/when you choose to use them.

The frequencies Walkie talkies use in the US are sometimes used as emergency responder channels in other countries. Don't use them in port unless you've been able to determine in advance what the situation is.

we have used them on several cruises and never had any problems. DH would be on Lido deck by the pool and I would be in the Casino (deck 5) and could hear him without any problems. every now & then we would pick up other people and we would just change channels

We used them on our first few cruise (about 6) while our son was younger and they worked great especially when he was in Camp Carnival he just wanted reassurance that we were still close around. We purchased the 20 mile range radios at a great price on line and we also used them on the islands the last couple of years for our group (we cruised with a bigger group 30 people+ and was much cheaper and faster than using cell phones) :D

Did a quick search and found a pair of WT range of 36 miles (if you like to use them on the islands) under $50 with free shipping.

Midland's GXT760VP4 radios feature 42 channels, along with NOAA weather/hazard alert. The standard 22 GMRS channels and an extra 20 boast a range of up to 36 miles. Scan the nearest NOAA broadcast to stay on top of weather information, lock, vibrate mode and privacy channels. :)

I'm going to Europe and was thinking about bringing a pair to keep in touch with friends when we split up on our excursions. We're going to take trains to different places together, then meet back when we decide to leave.

Still thinking about it...

I don't know how far apart you will be. But 10-20-whatever mile range walkie talkies bought retail never have near the range of what they advertise. Under their strictly controlled tests, sure, but never in the real world.
