janeblaine Posted August 29, 2011 #1 Share Posted August 29, 2011 We are sailing on the Marina to the Caribbean in February and would like a recommendation for a tour of San Juan.
HBINDC Posted August 29, 2011 #2 Share Posted August 29, 2011 Old San Juan is by far the most interesting part of the city. If you are physically able, is it all walkable. Pretty much laid out on a grid, so with a small map, you are set. There is also a free shuttle bus that goes around the area making frequent stops. Here is a link to a self-guided walking tour: http://www.discoveringpuertorico.com/2008/07/self-guided-walking-tour-of-old-san-juan-part-1/

Get a cab to take you to Morro Fort then work your way back to the pier through Old San Juan. We actually stayed an El Convento. It's a fantastic hotel. Barrachina is a restaurant only a few blocks from there that claims to have invented the Pina Colada. I don't know about the authenticity of the claim, but they taste good! Ragnar Danneskjold Posted August 31, 2011 #5 Share Posted August 31, 2011 On a stop in San Juan we rented a car (picked it up at the Sheraton Old Town) and drove out to see the Arecibo Radio Telescope (think Contact, James Bond, etc.). A very impressive structure, worth the drive. There is a nice toll road most of the way there. The town of Arecibo was not much to write home about so we never got out of the car there. We left after breakfast and were back in time to walk the fort, etc. before boarding to get ready for dinner.

It is located in old San Juan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_El_Convento Wow, we ate and saw a flamenco show there on our honeymoon 36 years ago last week! :) (We had no money so Puerto Rico in late August was a good deal.) Glad to read it still is around and doing well.
