Scumbers,

Take a look at this link for the Grand Turk Cruise Terminal

http://www.cruisetravelspecialist.com/grand-turk-cruise-center.html

Two cruise ships of any size can dock at the pier. If you happen to be there with one of the big Carnival ships, it can get pretty wild. :D

These must be new as I have never seen any clam shells on Grand Turk in the times we have been there????
That is what I thought, too. I found some older pictures, from 2006-2008 that did show some clamshells, but I think these must be discontinued, because all the recent pictures show just lounge chairs.

I know we have visited Grand Turk two or three times, but for the life of me, I can't remember the years we were there. But I know there were only lounges, and we didn't see one clam shell on the beach (shady areas for lounges were definitely at a premium, especially when we were the second ship to arrive on the island that day and the first one had all the shady spots taken). I thought maybe this was something new they were adding?

Hi There

We were there in the spring did not see any clam shells

there was a large carnival ship in before us,

place was mad, place can not handle two big ships

while you might find away down to the water

the best areas were all taken,

we had a look around the shops, as it was the only quite area

we then just joined the que of folks going back to the ship

yours Shogun

looking at the cruise schedule there is us plus the mariner totalling around 4400 people so hoping it not going to be to crazy

If your ship doesn't arrive first, unless you are going ashore to do some shopping, I wouldn't even bother to go ashore. This area just is not large enough to accomodate two large ships at the same time. Our last visit there, one of the larger Carnival ships arrived first, and by the time we docked and went ashore (one of the first off) there was not a lounge chair to be had on or near the beach, or a seat at Margaritaville anywhere. And crowded (even in the shopping areas) is not a way to describe what it felt like. Such a shame. As this would be a perfect stop for one large ship, but two at the same time, are one too many.

The only saving grace to arriving second when two ships are in port is IF the first leaves fairly early. That happened to us on the Emerald, and we first went down to Jack's Shack for a swim and a few drinks. When we returned, all the previously in-use loungers were available as the other ship pax packed up and headed for their departure. I am not sure if that happens very often, but I agree that two ships in port at the same time is VERY crowded.

Have been there many times with two ships in port. Just head down the beach, there is plenty of room. This is a perfect stop for beach lovers. Now, if you want a seat at the bar in Margaritaville, that might be a problem :).

We were there in Feb - no clam shells that we could see. When we arrived the beach was empty so we secured a great spot right away. But soon our DWs came and got us and said we needed to move to the side of the pool by Margaritaville. I questioned why we would do that then they explained the benefits of bar waiter service :-)

Clam shells alive and well as of July 28th cruise.

http://www.grandturkcc.com/islandinformation/fact-sheet.aspx

"Complimentary services at the Welcome Center include restrooms, foot washes, and lounge chairs at the pool and beach. For shading, free umbrellas are available in the pool area only. For the beach, we offer clam shell shade that will cover two lounge chairs; those are available at the Snorkel Rental Hut located on the beach. US$20 per day"

Grand Turk is one of my favorite places!! Enjoy!

Post #14 above answers your question.

You do not see it in the personalizer because it is not Princess who is renting them.

We were there in August and didn't see anyone using clamshells. We were lucky in that the Carnival ship that was docked there before us left about 3 hours after we arrived. I stayed aboard until they sounded their "all aboard" signal and by the time we got to the beach, there were plenty of chairs available.

I was on the same cruise as you, there were some further down to the left of your picture closer to the end of the cruise center where the bars are. I did the same thing..it is crowded if more than one ship is docked.

Laura

Here are some pictures, we were docked in GT on my birthday.. I googled the day, the ship, and the port.. Caribbean Princess - 2011 474

Ah yes, I didn't look at my photostream well enough. You can see where two (count 'em) people sprang for the cost of the clamshells in this photo... we found there was more than enough shade under the palm trees...

If you look at the link I posted earlier, which ironically I believe are to your photos..there are at least 8. The sun worshippers have no use for them, but for those who enjoy the shade or need the shade and want to be closer to the water's edge they are great!

Laura

PS Rickek you have some very nice photos!

LOL... yeah, the one with all the clamshells was earlier in the day. Whoops... that's what happens when you look at thumbnails.

And thanks!
