Is the specialty restaraunts really worth it?

My husband and I will be on the Glory in less than a week, and we have been contemplating going to the Emerald Rest, but just aren't sure. We have 3 children and this will be our first vacation without them, in many years. We just aren't sure if these restaraunts are worth it. What do you think? Also, what is the dress attire for the specialty restaraunts?

In a word... YES!

We did the steakhouse on the Freedom last year and it was hands-down the best meal I had ever had. When we sailed the Inspiration this past May, I was bummed that they didn't have a steakhouse. But you can bet your bottom that we'll be eating at the steakhouse on the Dream in a couple of months.

The food is better. The atmosphere is better. The service is top-notch. And sometimes, the view is OUTstanding.

If the Chef's Table menu is in effect 9/4/11 on Legend I'm cancelling my reservation and going to the Steakhouse. It's one of the worst menus I've seen.

In a way, it is "twice the price" because you already paid for the dinner you are "skipping" when you purchased your cruise ticket. But agreed, it's a terrific meal!

Bingo! Every thread I read that people say the extra restaurants are worth it, I think this exact same thing.

 

Now it has been a while since I cruised, but I will know soon how the food in the MDR compares on our upcoming cruise. It is a Fantasy class ship, so no steakhouse, but that is OK. If I had to guess by the postings that I have read here at CC, MDR is good, but steakhouse food is what MDR food used to be like years ago.

Its not just the food (which is quite a bit better than what one gets in the main dining room) but the more intimate atmosphere and more attentive service. Its a great change from the noise of the MDR.

We loved Davids on the Pride last January. Food was good,not great, but the setting was fantastic.

The staff were very nice but not very polished like you would get in a high end steak house.

The appetizers were just OK but the mains and desserts were quite good.

You should wear what you would to the MDR on that night but perhaps a bit nicer.

Every penny!! And neither my wife or myself are "foodies". A meal, good or bad, is just a meal to us. However the experience of the Steak House is awesome and again, worth every penny!! IMHO

For $ 30 pp on top of the cost of meal you are already paying for in the DR you are getting a very good dinner.

 

If you enjoy steak, would suggest you try it once and see if you like it.

It is most definitely worth it. A nice romantic dinner for two without being rushed. I am going to pre-book our dinner at David's for our cruise in January soon.

We have done it twice. 1st time was great 2nd it was so-so. I woould do it again tho. Not just for the food but for the ambience also. It's nice to have a more cozy atmosphere.

In my opinion, from a Dollars and sense point of view it is NOT worth the extra $30.00 per person, because of the money you already paid for the MDR.

 

Don't get me wrong, the food is good, the service can be very nice, (all but once) and the evening is a lot of fun. We have done it 3 times and love doing it, and will again in January with our son and his family.

 

But as you asked, is it worth it. No not really? Will we do it again, YES!

 

after all you are on vacation and splurging is fun, when on vacation.

Go there.......and gaze at one another for the 2 + hours it takes to slowly enjoy a wonderful dinner......and as others have noted....the greatest AMBIANCE on the ship.

I was just there on Saturday. Absolutely worth it. The food was fantastic; it was quiet and relaxing.

Cannot disagree with any of the previous posters. Did "Nick & Nora's" on the Miracle; and "Emerald" on the Glory. It will be a leisurly, elegant, and wonderful experience. The portion sizes are much larger than the MDR, and the food is far superior. Besides your appetiser, main course, and dessert, your server will also bring out a few "Chef's Delights" snack type appetisers for your dining pleasure. Dinner will take from 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Good music, and if the weather cooperates, great view as the ship cruises along. Overall, YES, well worth it.

Having been on SS United on X Infinity, I would have to say it is not worth it.

 

My main problem with the steak house on Carnival is lack of attention to detail (which I think a problem demonstrated in all aspects of Carnival's cruises). On Carnival the service is not polished (the side dishes arrive much later than the main dish - so you either eat your steak without the side dish or let your steak to cool).

 

I did not think the ambiance on on Spirit's steakhouse was that great - dark room with constantly shaking floor (design issue).

 

Plus it is just a steak house. I've been to Morton's and Ruth Chris - there is nothing new here. The meal is just not that memorable.

 

However, our meal on SS United was very memorable. Not the best of my life (that would be a french restaurant in Napa Valley when upon getting a first taste of my dessert I cried very loudly "OMG"), but still very very good.

 

That being said, the meal at the steak house will be much better than the one you get in MDR.

I fully agree with most of the posters here... I've been to the Steak House on both the Splendor and the Spirit... and both experiences were absolutely WONDERFUL!..... Definitely worth the $30pp.... In fact we'll be on the Spirit again in about 22 days... and we'll FOR SURE be going to the Steak House... The food was amazing!... I can't wait!.....
