Civitavecchia overoad?

In October we are cruising out of Civitavecchia (Rome) to Egypt and back. On both embarkation and debarkation days, the schedule indicates that five or six other ships will be there, with more than 20,000 passengers. Does anyone here have experience with that sort of crowding in the port and what it might mean for making travel connections?

Checked, rechecked, overchecked. Several times a day. We are still scheduled for a day in Port Said and a day in Alexandria. Thanks for the warning. Now, does anyone wish to comment upon the question of overcrowding in Civitavecchia?

I have only disembarked in Civitavecchia, and there were 5 ships due in that day. 3 were there when we arrived, and the 5th arrived about 30 minutes after we did.

Each one docked at a different part of the port, and each has its own small terminal (most of them are basically big tent like structures).

As the ships are spread out like that there was no particular crowding, and each ship seemed to start the disembarkation process at slightly different time.

As it was a Saturday the traffic on the highway to the airport was not bad at all, but the airport it'self did start to get quite busy. There is plenty of space inside, and people were going to different terminals and so it wasnt really any worse than a normal day.

Civitavecchia is a huge port that routinely handles more then a dozen ships every day (many of them are large ferries) and does it very well. We have often said that we think Civitavecchia and Barcelona are the two best run ports in Europe (Livorno is one of the worst). Civitavecchia also has the best internal shuttle bus service we have seen anywhere in the world. On a busy day they will actually have different buses going to different ships....which is all clearly posted on the front of the buses.

If you are using cruise line transfers then there won't be a problem: even if there should be some congestion or delay, the ship will wait for one of its official transfers.

If you're not then it might be different. From where would you be arriving at Civitavecchia? (That said, delays tend to be as a result of external events, e.g. rail strikes, or weird events such as this one - read the first half ogf the post about the coach transfer.)

And we are on one of those ships you just mentioned. We too are embarking in Civi on October 15th, but we are headed to Singapore. Have been there many times; last was in 2010 on the Ruby. Twice. No problem with all those ships because as you will see many are docked one after another; lengthwise. Are you staying overnight in Civi? Port is very close to town.
