cell phone use in St. Thomas?

Sailing on Oasis this coming Sat. and I'm wondering if I can use my cell in St. Thomas without huge roaming charges since it is a U.S. territory. Service is AT&T and I tried to search, but I couldn't find a definate answer. I know not to have it on while on the ship, but would like to check up on kids at home mid week while in St. Thomas if possible.

I found in a Google search that AT&T, Verizon, and Cingular all work on St Thomas. The mountains will affect coverage but I would guess in the port you get a good signal.

I used my AT&T service in both St. Thomas and San Juan without any problems. It was nice to call the office from the beach and rub it in!

So they didn't tack on big roaming fees? I have heard that you are using domestic phone plans there, but I just didn't want any surprises on my phone bill :eek:

Yes, it was funny! I didn't think about using the cellphone until I went out of my cabin after we arrived in port. Everyone was on their cellphone. I went back to my cabin to get mine to see if I had service. I have a pay as you go plan. My mom was shocked to hear my voice. I also have AT&T.

We lived on the Island for many years and used our AT&T cell phones as our primary phone. Puerto Rico is also the same, as is St Croix and St JOhn. Enjoy:)

AT&T and Sprint are both good. Verizon incurs roaming charges. Just be careful if you are close to the BVI as their system can take over and is very expensive..

I have Verizon and never any issues. One trip they charged us roaming charges to PR. I called Verizon when I got home told them we were on St. Thomas not PR. I even offered to fax them a copy of some of my expenses to prove were were there. They said that wasn't necessary and took the roaming fees off my bill.
