Me neither!! All I know is it's a fancy gadget most people want. I have all I can do to manipulate a simplified cell phone.:D

I have a FAKE one LOL its a Dell Galaxy pad. I keep it with me since I don't want it to get "manhandled" in the lugage, as they rummage thru to steal my bootlegged alcohol !

Sorry for her loss. Too all of you flaming her for putting it in her check luggage shame on YOU. For God's sake she is 78 years old. I would not expect her to carry anything on board. And yes it is Carnivals fault. I do not care if it is their empolyees or not. They ARE the ones with the contract with the Port not her. She paid Carnival for the curise not the port. If the port is not secure then Carnival should provide the security for THEIR passengers and belongings to get on THEIR ship.

I have to echo all the others on the thread. Why in the world would you put an IPAD, in your checked baggage? Nothing like saying to the Porters/Baggage handlers or anyone who has anything to do with the baggage, Hey STEAL ME!

Keep your personal belongings/valuables with you at all times when traveling.

OMG !!!! I love it !!!!

Mom in law is 85 and still travels all over the world, Just hope we will be around when we turn 85. On the other hand, she knows not to keep anything where it can be stolen. Im with the others, Carnival isnt at fault. I took my ipad when we sailed on the Liberty this past may and had our ipad with us along with some high end cameras also, after sailing since 1976 when we got married, that is one of the first things we knew about sailing..dont leave anything that could be stolen. Everyone needs to be proactive. However hope you find it...I know Im taking my Ipad when we sail with the bloggers in early March :}

Now that we have to leave our suitcases unlocked it is even more important to NOT pack anything valuable in the suitcase the porters take at the port.
No, we do NOT have to leave our bags unlocked, and I never will.

In the same FAQ on carnival.com where they "suggest" you leave your bags unlocked, they also state quite clearly that they don't employ the dock workers who handle baggage and therefore are NOT responsible for stolen articles.

How many of you lock your luggage. I never do, should I? I never put anything of value in it, just clothes and shoes.
I don't keep electronics or jewelry in there, but I still don't want somebody rifling through my bags just because it's easy. I ALWAYS lock my bags, even for air travel.

Really? The thing weighs about a pound and a half - mine fits nicely into my purse. Or a nice rolling carry-on. 78 is not THAT old, for goodness sake, she's cruising, she can carry that on with her. I hate that she had hers stolen, but people need to take responsibility for their possessions.

As has been said before, trip insurance may help in this situation (it may not too, it would depend on the policy). Also how about homeowners insurance. I know mine paid when my scanner got run over by a train.

Oh my... we are frequent travelers.. my mom goes alot!!

She gave her bags over to security at the New Orleans port of Carnival. She got on the ship, got her luggage, and her brand new IPAD was gone!!!

They "state" they are not responsible... WHATEVER!!!! they take your luggage, they ARE responsible!!!

I am soooooo mad I can barely type this!!

My mom ( and Aunt who is with her), are in their late 70's. What is wrong here!!

Carnival MUST step up and accept responsiblity. My sisters and I gave her this IPAD for her 78th birthday.... GEEZ.....

I will keep everyone informed!

I think this is very important to know when traveling on Carnival.

On RCI they step up to everything they are responsible for????

All I can say is..... where is our customer service here!@~!????

Oh yea... so mad forgot to say..

They are on the Triumph !!!!!!

What's wrong here you ask.

1) She gave her bag to a porter who sent it on its journey to her cabin.

A porter is not security.

2) Valuables were in it.

I am sure you are upset as I would be, but it could have been prevented.

Do you pack valuables in your double locked luggage, though?

We never lock ours, and have never had anything stolen. But we never pack anything of value either. Even if I locked it, nothing of value would be in there.

There is always a first time for everyone.

It doesn't matter what I put in my suitcase. If someone wants in my suitcase, they will need to have me present. There is usually nothing of value in my car, but I always lock it, too.

I suppose it is possible that the Ipad was accidentally left at home.

Why would she put an ipad in checked luggage, if she travels alot should she not have realized how the luggage is handled ? No very carefully I might add, how can Carnival be responsible for valuables place in luggage ? especially without proof... ROyal Caribbean would not have taken responsibilty either...

Oh yes RCL is very responsible...they left the passengers in St Juan PR during the hurricane and CCL made sure to make arrangements for the passengers left behind. Point CCL

I've noticed a few people talking about RCCL and the San Juan incident and just wanted to post this:

http://travel.usatoday.com/cruises/post/2011/09/royal-caribbean-hurricane-irene-stranded-passengers-puerto-rico/545577/1

Royal Caribbean has decided to offer some compensation to the 145 passengers it left in San Juan, Puerto Rico, last week when approaching Hurricane Irene forced it to leave three hours early.

RELATED: Carnival leaves 300 passengers in San Juan

Royal Caribbean said passengers who were able to catch up with the ship by flying to Aruba two days later would get a future cruise certificate valued at 30 percent of the cruise fare paid for their sailing. It also said passengers who missed the entire cruise would get another offer, but it would not disclose the compensation details until it had contacted all the affected passengers.

However, the cruise line did not say if it would reimburse the passengers' out-of-pocket expenses for two nights' hotel accommodations in San Juan, and transportation to Aruba.

The change comes after the line faced a barrage of criticism about its treatment of the passengers left behind. Last week the line had only offered to cover expenses for the 15 passengers who had purchased their air fare through the cruise line. Royal Caribbean had insisted it owed nothing to other passengers because the schedule change was due to weather, and out of its control.

By contrast, Carnival Cruise Lines offered to cover expenses for all the 300 passengers it left behind when the storm also forced it to leave San Juan early.

"We are compensating these passengers because we understand that this was an unusual situation, and we want to provide our guests with another opportunity to sail with Royal Caribbean International in the near future," the line said in a statement.

Guess it just took them awhile to realize they were in the wrong~but not completely in the wrong since they didn't pay for the 2 nights hotel stay~
