Southwest Charge Card

I have never flown Southwest but I am thinking of using them for a flight to Houston in Jan. Is it worth getting the charge card so one of us can have a free flight or are there all kinds of stipulations that make it not worth it? Thanks in advance for any advise you might be able to give...

Depending on which card you get there will be an annual fee but it comes with some free points. If the points will cover your flight purchase then it is worth it. It is easy to see the points needed on the website, just click 'show price in points' instead of 'show price in dollars'. Points are usable on any available seat, but the number needed will go up as the flight fills up. No blackout dates, very easy system to use. Some people get the card, take the points and flight and then cancel the card. That may or may not impact your credit rating, but it is your decision.

We have a friend who got the card for the free flight, and it seemed to go well for her. Read the terms first. I believe you have to make a purchase after you get the card, and then it has to be credited to your account before you can take the flight. Just allow lead time for that and for your reservation to be made in advance.

Though not particularly germane to discussing the WN card, but be aware of a semantic issue: There are CREDIT cards and there are CHARGE cards. Credit cards allow for carrying balances from month to month and are extensions of revolving credit. Charge cards require payment in full each month. They are not the same thing, nor should they be called the same.

 

This is most applicable for American Express cards which come in both varieties. Be aware of what you are talking about, as they are distinct and different animals.
