Alchol Package

I would like to know what kind of control Celebrity has so that the package deals are not shared?

1. You can only order one drink at a time.

2. They clearly state that the package is not to be shared (arguably not a control, but it should be.)

Information on additional controls is mostly speculation but their system does log each drink (and it shows up as a zero on your folio) so one would imagine that as well as the staff keeping an eye on people (I am sure they are trained to do that) that the system could monitor ordering patterns. Example: moving to another bar minutes later for a second drink for someone else could easily be noted.

Look below for a copy of the response I posted to the similar question you posted earlier today on a different thread.

No offense, but I'm curious as to why you're concerned about the matter. Is it because of a general curiosity or because you're trying to determine if you can circumvent their controls to cheat the system?

Hi,

My question is the following, how does Celebrity monitor that the package deal is used only by the person who actually bought it. What prevents a person who has a premium package deal and gets his drink and then decides that he doesn't want to drink it and passes it on to his spouse. Is there some kind of control?.

dh

Celebrity does register all the drinks one obtains under a package and I'm sure they have controls in place to detect sharing. But just like I can't tell you how the department store near my house controls shoplifters, I don't know the precise controls they have in place.

I would also presume that people's sense of honestly and integrity prevent this from being a big issue. However, just as there are some who have no issue stealing merchandise from a store or other crimes, I'm sure that there are some whose morals are low enough that they decide to try and cheat the system and share the packages.

Other cruise lines with similar package options have gone the route of requiring all passengers sharing a cabin to purchase identical packages. I don't know if they did this to control sharing in advance or as a reaction to problems, and I hope it doesn't become an issue on Celebrity and force them to take similar actions or to raise the prices to offset any losses.

The bars are quite small and you soon get to know the bar tenders, (who incidentally move around from bar to bar sometimes) just as they soon get to know you.

They know who you are with and it doesn't take a genius to see that the other person isn't buying the drinks they are drinking, not to mention the onboard account spending pattern of the person without the package. Just as they quickly learn your name and room number, they learn your drinking pattern.

Sharing would be a pain in the neck. It would mean you can't sit at a bar together and as for roaming around the ship using different bars, why would anyone want to pay for a great cruise then skimp on one of the best things about being at sea: socialising together over drinks. It just isn't worth it.

I don't get the draw to try and share. If you are drinking any significant amount (any amount where it would benefit you purchasing the package) then I would think the hassle of always going back and trying to sneak a second drink would get old fairly quick.

If you don't drink much, there is really no point to the package, since it's cheaper to purchase by the drink.

It must be the couple that drinks enough together to justify ONE package. In that case, I think the risk of getting caught is a personal moral decision for them. The cruise line is not losing money on the deal (no more than say, me alone on my package), but if they are caught, I could see the line charging them both for the package for the whole cruise and it goes away.

I'm not trying to justify it, but to see several people on here get all worked up about the line being ripped off and losing money, I just don't see how that would really happen. Yes, in my mind it's stealing, but you are not going to see two people on one package continually get sloshed for the whole cruise... They'll either get caught, or will be unsuccessful in their endeavors.

To be honest, the line probably has factored into the pricing algorithm what the average person will drink, then added one for the spouse into the model (or wasted, or heavy pour on the bartender).

Again, not saying I would ever do such thing, but the line knows it happens, they have ways of figuring it out, and probably let it go unless it's out of hand to avoid a conflict.

With that said, I'm sailing with a group in December on Eclipse, and every last one of us will have some package, most of us will have premium.

Would that be the December 3rd sailing?

Yes, not available on Silhouette, per Celebrity website:

"Celebrity's Taste of the Vineyards presents you with a worry-free way to choose wine for your entire cruise. Produced by top quality vineyards and international regions, our collection is designed to provide you with a vast assortment to choose from, as well as superior value. Simply advise your sommelier which wine you would like to have with your meal.

Quantities vary per package. Once you have confirmed your purchase online, the order cannot be modified. You may, however, cancel the order and then make your purchase(s) again.

Packages must be pre-reserved a minimum of four days before your sail date. To purchase Beverage Packages on board, please visit any bar throughout the ship. Taste of the Vineyards wine package is not available on Solstice® Class ships."

This question seems to get posted fairly often...

There is only one reason i can think someone would ask...

They want to game the system!

If someone wants to game this system, they might as well order a single drink from the bartender, then reach behind the counter and pour themselves a second drink...

Celebrity has clearly made an offer to cruisers...you pay $xx/day for unlimited drinks of a certain type. If you agree to pay $xx/day for that right to drink them, that is what you get, otherwise you pay per drink!

If you then give 'extra' drinks to a spouse or friend, you are stealing those drinks, as that was not part of the offer.

To me it's a moral issue because they are steeling from Celebrity, which passes that theft to the rest of us that purchase the package. So in the end, the rest of the passengers pay for this persons theft and breach of contract with Celebrity.

And yes, ready to be flamed!
