krkheffe Posted September 26, 2011 #1 Share Posted September 26, 2011 I want to do a snorkel trip in Kona the first week of December. We are on POM Dec 3-10. My father in law sent me a water temp chart that shows average water temp for that area in December to be around 72. They decided to cancel the snorkel trip because it would be too cold. Anyone snorkel in Dec. that had a problem with the water being too cold? I know many places rent wet suits which would help. Just wondering.... Thanks! CruiserBruce Posted September 26, 2011 #2 Share Posted September 26, 2011 That is about right- probably mid 70s. Up to you about canceling. Never been that much of an issue to us. A small number of people use wetsuits. Never have personally.
jcl410 Posted September 27, 2011 #3 Share Posted September 27, 2011 I used to live in Hawaii, and took many cruises in December. I had no problem snorkeling in December at any location. i'm pretty sure the water temp at the surface - 5 feet down or so was closer to 80 degrees - Aloha, John
jonbgd Posted September 27, 2011 #4 Share Posted September 27, 2011 The water isnt too cold but sometimes the air is. I wear a shorty wetsuit if Im doing an early morning(sunrise) snorkel in the winter. If your doing the late morning or afternoon snorkel it is fine without one
krkheffe Posted September 27, 2011 Author #5 Share Posted September 27, 2011 Thanks for the info....our excursion is a morning one starting at 8:30am I think and goes until maybe 12 or 12:30pm. I emailed the company to see if they rent wet suits...haven't heard back from them yet.
