I've been rather lax about keeping the list over here up to date, I'm just not on this site very much anymore. The list is usually always current (or as current as we know) over on the place that CC does not allow us to name. Search Piano Bar-Barians and you will find it.

Just an FYI Cruisebird, Martin Aucoin is not on the list currently. And Mary Gast will be leaving ships for a while when his contract on the Imagination is up in July.

But here is the current list:

Thank you! I'd like to say I know where that place is without you telling me where to search...but I didn't. Thanks for the info! Glad to hear about Martin...sad to hear about Marty. My daughter actually follows him on Facebook....he made our cruise.

OK....slightly belated and I do HOPE to write a review this coming weekend BUT for those of you interested in Piano Bar thoughts.....

I was on the 2/1 sailing of the Liberty and we spent LOTS of time in the Piano Bar with Jonathan Thompson.

The first night I was just not sure it was going to be good but I have to say I wound up having TONS of fun with him.

Jonathan is new not just to Carnival but to the ship Piano Bar scene in general. His repertoire can admittedly use some working on as he seems to know more country songs than other genres and he has not developed a whole bunch of fun, raunchy, late-night stuff some of the "greats" have developed; however, he was fun, had a good personality and was willing to take whatever requests he could do. He was amicable with the crowd and pulled people in. There were a couple of pax with great voices and he was happy to let them sing with him. He also seems to have a good group of friends among the Carnival entertainment staff who also joined him for songs each evening.

If you are sailing with him soon I would definitely suggest spending some time in the Piano Bar.

P.S......His beverage of choice is coke and jack which he gulps down in one sip, ice and all......beware of Canadians who buy him 9 at a time....that hurts!!

I was HUGELY disappointed in Jonathan. I thought he was really bad

Wish there was a similar list for Holland America! Seems like since they are a sister company to Carnival, that some of the same artists may appear on both lines. How would one go about getting/creating a similar list?

Wish there was a similar list for Holland America! Seems like since they are a sister company to Carnival, that some of the same artists may appear on both lines. How would one go about getting/creating a similar list?

There actually isn't a lot of cross pollination, at least with active entertainers, there are some former CCL piano folks that play on other lines. Laurie Anne Gardner does Norwegian now, so does Vince Strong. Joe Hollywood has done RCCL and Norwegian lately. Greg Gallello has been doing Holland America. Peter Rossetti has been over on Celebrity. Bruce McGhie is working P&O. The only entertainer I know of that juggles Carnival and another line simultaneously is Seth Gibson, he often alternates between Carnival and Disney contracts.

As far as creating a new list? The list we have here is the product of a 7 or 8 year evolution. It started out as a list put together by the cruisers, people reporting in on the original thread about who was in the piano bar when they or someone they knew were on the ship. Back then we often had only first names and no start/end dates, and lots of holes in the schedule.

As we got to know some of the entertainers, they started reporting in on their contracts, plus they would often report what they heard in CCL grapevine. I started tracking down entertainers on facebook or websites when we found out full names and made contact with them to get their info and most started emailing me when they received a new contract. After a while I developed enough contacts within Carnival that I could get someone to slip me the schedule every so often. But it is and has always been dependent on the involvement of other cruisers and the entertainers reporting in.

The current list is a product of all of the above, plus a lot of time spent nagging John Heald until he started mentioning the piano bars and then eventually started posting the schedule from the office on his blog or FB page on a semi-regular basis. (it's totally Pavlovian at this point. If you ever meet John, just mention the name Divetrash and his brain immediately goes to piano bars. LOL Whether he starts drooling or not, I don't know... LOL)

So where to start? I would start with the cruisers. Make a thread like this on the Holland America board and ask people to report in from their cruises. Make a list of the ships and fill in as many as you can. It will evolve, as you meet more and more people. And try to get any entertainers that you meet involved. That is a big help, plus can lead you to contacts within the Holland America entertainment department.

Good luck and happy cruising,

Laura

Ya'll have been kinda quiet on this thread lately. One of the big reasons I use for choosing a particular cruise is who is in the piano bar. Now that Ron Pass is no longer regularly with Carnival, I am in a conundrum. There are a bunch of new piano bar entertainers on Carnival these days and I would like to hear about them... the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I think Ben Gentry is absolutely fantastic. Lots of fun, big repertoire (although admittedly light on some of the older stuff, but he's learning), works the crowd well.

Based on the night he filled in on Ben Gentry's day off, I think Adam Tel Sayer (currently in the piano bar on the Miracle now) is going to be great as well. Great musician on both piano and guitar, really good voice, and very personable with the people in the room.

Russell Villarin, Tom Grable and Roger Concepcion are still getting solid reviews after all these years.

Ones I want to see based on all I've heard and read include, Todd "TC" Fugate (My friend Bee absolutely adores him and she is a big Ben Gentry fan as well), "Piano Bar Bob" Berhalter, Seth Gibson and Ed Rocks (a legendary veteran who has returned for more abuse)

The office is pretty much requiring dueling piano experience (even though they only hire one entertainer) because they want that high energy, interactive experience. So most of the newbies you encounter will hopefully bring that to the room.

Happy Cruising,

Laura

We had the pleasure of sailing with Seth for the first half of our Sunshine cruise in November (he left us in Grand Cayman :( ) I'm also a huge Ron Pass fan (would book cruises just to see him) and really enjoyed Seth's show. I think you'll like him! His style is very similar to Ron's and he really gets the crowd involved. It was standing room only every night, even though the piano bar on Sunshine was a little hidden and out of the way.

Does anyone know anything about Milburn Dumas? Headed out on the Liberty soon, and it looks like he's our man.

We had Milburn on the Ecstasy this past January. He wasn't too bad and really tried to get the crowd going. He is an older gentleman so his humor was kind of goofy in my opinion. He knows quite a few piano songs but not necessarily piano bar songs so to speak. I would put him in the middle of the pack of all the different piano bar folks we have had.

Count me and my husband as another vote for Ben Gentry. DH went to the piano bar kicking and screaming and after listening to Ben for 45 minutes did not want to leave and insisted on going every night after that. We had seen Ron Pass on the Breeze and DH did not care for him and I liked him but did not feel the need to go every night like I did with Ben.

I just started visiting the piano bar last year and had the great fortune of having Marty Gast on the Freedom. What a fun time! Piano bar was always full when we were there. I learned some new songs on that cruise:p

Kim

Marty was one of the best! To bad he is gone now and will not be back for a while if ever.

Kim, when are you going on the Inspiration? If it is after 11-2-14 you will have TC at the piano bar and he has a similar style to Marty, you should like him.
