4THELOVEOFBOO Posted October 2, 2011 #1 Share Posted October 2, 2011 Hey guys, I;m just a little curious on how rough waters can get. Can you post pictures of rough waters that you have experienced on past cruises??? Thanks ahead of time
Alliezona09 Posted October 2, 2011 #2 Share Posted October 2, 2011 Here's a video if you really want to see how rough it can get: that being seen~ I've only been on 8 cruises and have never experienced anything close to that!! I think it depends on what sea you are cruising on and what time of year~

*Mach* Posted October 2, 2011 #4 Share Posted October 2, 2011 It's always seemed to me that rough seas are difficult to capture in pictures unless you're right down on the water line. You look down on the sea and you lose the sense of height of the waves. This is a picture of 12 to 14 foot seas taken from the Lobby Deck of the Conquest: The ship was moving about fairly well. Lots of seasick folks... The worst seas I've been in were 30 feet while on the Carnival Dream. :)

I think it depends on what sea you are cruising on and what time of year~ Before everybody freaks out..... keep in mind that the Pacific Sun is only a 47,000 ton ship and if I am not mistaken, the smallest CCL in fleet is around 70,000 tons!! Logically, a ship of that size would not do well in rough water!
QTPieRye Posted October 2, 2011 #6 Share Posted October 2, 2011 I forgot to mention that I have seen VERY rough water on the Conquest sailing from NO to the Western Caribbean..... but it was kind of expected considering we set sail during Hurricane Ivan!!! That was the most interesting cruise~ less than 2,000 passengers due to NO being closed for evacuations up until the day prior to sailing date. I can remember walking on the Lido Deck and literally having to lean my body inward to balance :)

Logically, a ship of that size would not do well in rough water! Yep... the Fantasy Class are about 70,400 gross tons. The Pacific Sun is 122 feet shorter (733 feet...) and a bit more than half the gross tonage... The Pacific Sun is a Holiday Class ship. She used to be the Jubliee. QTPieRye Posted October 2, 2011 #12 Share Posted October 2, 2011 Not to hijac this thread...... but now I am sitting here wondering how many other CC'ers were brave enough to board a cruiseship during a hurricane? I have to admit when we watched Ivan, from the cruiseship, start to circle back around towards the Gulf of Mexico, it was a little freaky!
*Mach* Posted October 2, 2011 #13 Share Posted October 2, 2011 Where were they 30 feet? Hoping not Europe!!! Off the coast of New York and New England... We sailed into a very impressive NorEaster... :)
MsTabbyKats Posted October 2, 2011 #14 Share Posted October 2, 2011 I was on the NCL Dawn in May 2008.....to Bermuda 50 ft waves & 50 mph winds...... It was like flying with extreme turbulence...but it lasted for days instead of hours.
JerseyshoreBruce Posted October 2, 2011 #15 Share Posted October 2, 2011 I have no idea how big the waves were but on the Carnival Miracle back in 2005 (my first cruise) the decks were closed so i couldn't get pictures but the winds on deck were 80 mph. The ship was following Hurricane Katrina up to the keys and then we were forced to return to Ft. Lauderdale instead of Tampa. Carnival bused us across the state back to Tampa. Ship moved up and down alot but i didn't get sick....spent the day in the casino :)

Silverman Posted October 3, 2011 #17 Share Posted October 3, 2011 If you do a search on youtube you can see some pretty bad seas. One I found was on the Dream shot from a cove balcony. After seeing that I will never ever get a cove.

Stargateman Posted October 3, 2011 #20 Share Posted October 3, 2011 We were on Voyager of the Seas (RCL) in 2005, 30 to 40ft waves for 48 hours, all decks closed and lots of people got sick. Went to the MDR and only a few people at dinner.
vacruizer Posted October 3, 2011 #21 Share Posted October 3, 2011 This was from May 2009 on the Carnival Pride. We hit a cold front coming off the coast of NC. First morning temps were in the 40s which no one was expecting in May! Loved the rough seas. I was mesmerized watching the waves crash and the wind picking the spray up off the crests of the waves. Our balcony on deck 8 was soaked most of the first two days from the spray. My husband and i kept walking around the ship thinking that we had forgotten how uncrowded the Spirt class ships were. It wasn't until we docked in Nassau two days later that everyone appeared and we realized after talking to a few people that a good number of cruisers had been in their rooms not feeling well. It wasn't long after I got these pics that the outer decks were all closed off. Probably one of my favorite cruises, though.

iceleven Posted October 3, 2011 #24 Share Posted October 3, 2011 I remember cruising to Bermuda out of Philly (more than 10 years ago) and we hit some rough waters. Silly me, I had taken "Perfect Storm" with me to read during the cruise. I remember all night long sitting up and looking out at the window and watching the white caps and swells and allowing my imagination get carried away. I would stare out for long periods of time and swear I could see giant rouge waves coming at us. I actually enjoy rough waters and the movement of the ocean. A long time ago I taught myself a certain breathing technique and I've never gotten sea sick.
