cheffip Posted October 12, 2011 #1 Share Posted October 12, 2011 Does anyone know what the impact on travellers and tourists will be from the general public service strike scheduled for October 28? It's been called by UIL which is apparently the country's third largest union.
Knolmom Posted October 12, 2011 #2 Share Posted October 12, 2011 Would a general strike affect the operation of the vaporetto boats in Venice?

Rare cruisemom42 Posted October 13, 2011 #6 Share Posted October 13, 2011 It's a labor union strike. I don't think transportation would be affected. I can't find much info on this union to figure out what types of workers would be involved.....
CathyCruises Posted October 13, 2011 #7 Share Posted October 13, 2011 Oh good. I don't even know where to look (besides here!)
euro cruiser Posted October 13, 2011 #8 Share Posted October 13, 2011 UIL is the union of public employees, like civil servants in the US. This walkout appears to be in protest of proposed measures to cut back on costs and will shut down government offices for the day. There will also be a big rally in Rome, according to the union's web site here: http://www.uilpa.it/
CathyCruises Posted October 13, 2011 #9 Share Posted October 13, 2011 EuroCruiser, is it your knowledgable opinion that trains won't be affected? Doesn't sound like it from the description. . .
cheffip Posted October 13, 2011 Author #10 Share Posted October 13, 2011 I'm wondering what would happen at the airport...for example are customs and immigration officers civil servants who would join the strike?
euro cruiser Posted October 14, 2011 #11 Share Posted October 14, 2011 EuroCruiser, is it your knowledgable opinion that trains won't be affected? Doesn't sound like it from the description. . . There are limitations on the frequency of strikes that can be called by any one union ... I think that the Trenitalia workers are precluded from joining in on this one because they already have a potential strike on the books in October, and another one in November. That said, these are unusual times in Europe. It's hard to know if the political unrest caused by their economic woes will lead workers to protest outside of the prescribed system. CathyCruises Posted October 14, 2011 #12 Share Posted October 14, 2011 Well of course that's a good point. If we have to spend another day in Venice oh well!
