General Strike - Oct 28

Does anyone know what the impact on travellers and tourists will be from the general public service strike scheduled for October 28? It's been called by UIL which is apparently the country's third largest union.

It's a labor union strike. I don't think transportation would be affected. I can't find much info on this union to figure out what types of workers would be involved.....

UIL is the union of public employees, like civil servants in the US. This walkout appears to be in protest of proposed measures to cut back on costs and will shut down government offices for the day. There will also be a big rally in Rome, according to the union's web site here: http://www.uilpa.it/

I'm wondering what would happen at the airport...for example are customs and immigration officers civil servants who would join the strike?

There are limitations on the frequency of strikes that can be called by any one union ... I think that the Trenitalia workers are precluded from joining in on this one because they already have a potential strike on the books in October, and another one in November.

 

That said, these are unusual times in Europe. It's hard to know if the political unrest caused by their economic woes will lead workers to protest outside of the prescribed system.
