It looks like the drivers license and birth certificate will be a thing of the past.

Get it now before the lines form.

WASHINGTON — U.S. citizens will be required to show a passport to re-enter the United States from Canada, Mexico, Panama, Bermuda and the Caribbean by 2008, the departments of State and Homeland Security announced Tuesday.

It's even earlier than 2008. The below is directly from the "when will you need a passport" FAQ in the official government announcement yesterday:

 

December 31, 2005 - Apply the requirement to all travel (air/sea) to or from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Central and South America.

 

The "you only need a birth certificate" crowd is getting a loud wake-up call....

correct, travel to the Caribbean by any means will be end of 2005, after that you need a passport. Travel to Canada/Mexico by air/sea you will need one after end 2006 and land border crossings will be required by end of 2007.
