Carnival Victory Review 11/13/20 with pictures

My boyfriend and I have cruised before, but this was my first Carnival Cruise. It was supposed to be a group cruise but due to several circumstances, we ended up being the only ones who went.

Saturday November 12th

We had a direct flight from Charlotte to San Juan on Saturday November 12th. We arrived around 2:30 and caught a taxi to the Intercontinental. Cab fare was $12 plus $1 for each bag. We dropped off our bags and headed out to take some pictures and grab a quick snack. We walked out towards the beach and then walked down the beach and made a circle back to the main road that the hotel is on. We walked by this diner looking place called “Piu Bello” and grabbed some sandwiches and headed back to the hotel.

Around 7, we walked over to have dinner at Mia Casita. Like others have mentioned, the place was packed and service was extremely slow. I think our dinner with tip was around $55 for 2 dinners and 2 sodas.

We headed back to the hotel and fell asleep early. The bed was very comfortable and I slept like a baby. Note: Unlike the other negative responses the Intercontinental has received, other than a minor issue checking in (which was Hotwire’s fault, not the hotel), I have no complaints about this hotel.

Sunday November 13th

My boyfriend got up early and ate breakfast across the street at the Ponderosa while I slept in. We headed over to the pier around 11 AM and was surprised that most porters where still busy helping the people disembark and had no interest in helping us with our bags. We only had 2 bags a piece so it wasn’t a big deal. But last time I cruised from there, the porters were like vultures. I only counted 5 employees checking in the cruisers but we only had to wait about 30 minutes. They were not yet allowing people to board but we had planned on setting out to explore OSJ anyway so we left and headed to La Bombonera for some food. As usual, it was packed. Service was fast and food was great!

2011%252520Cruise%252520079.JPG

We then took a taxi to El Morro. They had a special event that day so entrance into the fort was free. We walked around the fort and took pictures for about 45 minutes.

2011%252520Cruise%252520096%252520-%252520Copy.JPG

Then we started walking towards the ship taking various pictures along the way. We boarded the ship around 5 PM and our luggage was already waiting for us. We had cabin #6224 – it’s one of the L-shaped cabins with the double long balconies. I really loved the layout of the room.

2011%252520Cruise%252520-%252520Sony%252520Camera%252520040.JPG

My only complaint about the room is that it is directly above two lounges and the bass guitars and drums would vibrate the room, but I knew that going in. It wasn’t enough to keep me awake, I was exhausted each night! We headed down to deck 4 like our sign and sail cards advised but because it was the first night, we were advised to go down to deck 3 for the first night only. I cannot remember what I ordered b/c the only memory I have of that dinner is dessert…the Hot Chocolate Melting Cake!!!!!

2011%252520Cruise%252520153.JPG

We headed back off the ship to pick up a few more items and then got back on the ship and staked out our place for the sail away knowing I wanted a view of El Morro as we exited the port of San Juan.

After sail away, I headed down to the casino. While I am not a big gambler, I spend about $20 a night on penny slots purely for enjoyment. I headed down to the casino and had to wait about 20 minutes b/c we were not into international waters yet. During those 20 minutes, I sat at three different machines and finally decided to play a penny slot called “Fortune Cookie”. I inserted my $20 and within 10 minutes, I hit a nice jackpot! $406! I cashed out with $431.25 and stayed away from the casino the rest of the week! I went to bed a happy camper.

Monday November 14th

I had been to St. Thomas 3 times before but it was my boyfriend’s first time. I had booked “Godfrey’s Tour” and for $29 we got 3 hours of shopping in downtown, a tour of the island, and a couple hours at Megan’s beach. The tour included the usual scenic route, including the “Mountain Top” look out. I really enjoy the open aired taxis. It makes for great pictures and I wish the other islands had them! Godfrey took us back to the port with a couple hours to spare. We didn’t do any shopping in the shops around the pier. As we did at each port, we sat on our balcony watching the sunset as we waited to pull out of port and then watched the islands shrink into the distance.

We headed down to deck 4 for our dinner and was seated in a section waited on by Ketut. He and his staff we wonderful. We requested him every night we ate in the dining room (we skipped formal nights b/c we didn’t bring formal wear.) After dinner, we walked around a bit and headed to bed early, like we did every single night. With early ports of call each day and me not being a morning person it was necessary. Plus I lost an hour of sleep :D

Tuesday November 15th

Tuesday was our only sea day and I was determined to grab one of those nice lounges in the adults only Sanctuary area.

2011%252520Cruise%252520146%252520-%252520Copy.JPG

We got to Sanctuary at 8:30 AM and found 2 of the 4 beds already occupied with books and towels so we grabbed one of the two lounges left. About 2 hours later, one of the couples who had “saved” their lounge with books and towels showed up. I grabbed a bite to eat while my bf sun bathed. All morning, I watched as people walked by trying to find a place to layout. All the while, one of the lounges was still only occupied by a towel and books. I had enough when I saw an older couple apparently frustrated with not being able to find a place to sit. By this time, it was 12:30 PM and the one couple that had showed up at 10:30 had left again so both lounges were now “saved” by their books and towels…..again. I got up and removed the towels and book from the one lounge that NO ONE had come to claim all morning. Remember, I had been there since 8:30 AM and know for a fact that no one had come. I removed their stuff and advised the couple to sit down. They looked perplexed and I told them that no one had been there all day. They gratefully sat down and I continued to enjoy my day in the sun. Around 1:30, the couple that had showed up at 10:30 returned with another couple – apparently the owners of the towel and book I had removed. They looked perplexed and I heard the woman say, “Where is your stuff?” I advised them that we moved it. One couple said, “We just left to get some lunch” to which I replied, “YOU left to go get lunch, your friends have not been here all day. So we removed their stuff!” They did not argue a single second and the 4 of them shared the one lounge they had. Can I just tell you how much that irks me? How rude that you think you are entitled to “save” your lounge for 4 hours while others are walking all over trying to find a place to sit.

We ate at the buffet for dinner and I have to tell you, after cruising on NCL, Royal Caribbean and Princess, I was disappointed with the Victory’s buffet. It is so small and limited. I rarely found anything at the buffet that peaked my interest. I headed out to the pizza buffet and grabbed a couple slices of pizza. Throughout the cruise, the pizza buffet was either slammed or completely empty. The pizza was very good IMO.

I think tonight was the night we went to the comedy lounge at the back of the ship on deck 5. We saw the adults only show of “Happy Cole”. He was extremely funny and was disappointed that he only performed for about 30 minutes – maybe less. It went by so fast!

Wednesday November 16th

Today was Barbados! I have to tell you that after researching many hours on CC, I still could not find anything I wanted to do in Barbados. I had called the Hilton prior to us heading to San Juan to see if they were still allowing day passes for the day we were in port and she advised me that they were. But, after deciding it would cost us $35 each for the day pass AND having to pay for taxi’s each way, we decided to just walk around and play it by ear. We walked out through the main entrance into the port and were immediately approached by a taxi driver offering us an hour long tour for $35. We were a little shocked by the price but decided we should see at least some of the island. So for an hour, he drove us around showing us a small portion of the island. He showed us a lot of fancy neighborhoods, including the golf resort were Tiger Woods got married. 2011%252520Cruise%252520-%252520Sony%252520Camera%252520051.JPG

He also took us to the oldest known church in the area.

2011%252520Cruise%252520-%252520Sony%252520Camera%252520059.JPG

He dropped us off in the downtown district and we started walking around. We were a little hungry so we followed the locals and found a restaurant called Tim’s. It was a small place on the second floor near the waterfront. It’s a buffet style restaurant where you basically point to things and ask what it is because you have no clue lol. I ate the macaroni pie and it was delicious. The price was not bad either. We each got a plate and two drinks for $15 US ($30 Barbadian). 2011%252520Cruise%252520-%252520Sony%252520Camera%252520063.JPG

We headed towards the waterfront and followed it back to the ship (about a 15 minute walk).

2011%252520Cruise%252520256.JPG

I would advise anyone visiting Barbados to have a game plan. This is not the island to try and “wing it”. I heard that some passengers had booked “Glory Tours” and thoroughly enjoyed it. I think Barbados was my least favorite island on this trip.

After dinner, and chocolate melting cake, we went to our only show in the main theatre. It was a juggler. He was very funny and we both enjoyed the show. We had planned on seeing Happy Cole again, but his shows were at 10 and 11 and we were just too tired. That was one thing I noticed about the comedy shows. They were always so late, that I couldn’t stay up to watch them ;)

Thursday November 17th

Today was St. Lucia and I was so excited b/c we had booked “Cosol Tours” after reading so many good reviews on CC. Cosol was waiting for us as we exited the ship and after checking everyone in, we followed him to the parking lot. There we were split into 4 different vans. Our driver was named Bumpy. We started off on our island adventure and we all listened intently to Bumpy as he told us about the history and culture of the island. Our first stop was the Banana Plantation. We all exited the van while Bumpy told us about the process of growing Banana’s and gave everyone a sample. I personally don’t like banana’s but my boyfriend said it was the best one he ever had!

2011%252520Cruise%252520333.JPG

We continued on our way and made our second stop with a beautiful view of a fishing village. It was also the first “drinking stop”. I don’t drink alcohol but the cooler was filled with water, soda’s, beer and rum punch! At almost every stop, there are vendors there trying to sell some stuff but they aren’t very pushy. At this stop, there was a gentleman there with Caribbean drums showing people how to play “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”.

2011%252520Cruise%252520343.JPG

We drove through a few small towns and Bumpy advised us about the local elections that were going to take place on Sunday. On one side of the street were supporters of the current man in office who all wore yellow. And on the opposite side of the street, were the supporters of the opposition wearing red. After a couple more scenic stops, including a boa constrictor stop, it was time for breakfast. When all 4 vans arrived, we walked down a driveway where a couple tables were set up and plates with local snacks were provided. Each item was labeled and made by a local woman who did all the preparation.

2011%252520Cruise%252520360.JPG

After lunch, the tour continued and we began to see the first glimpse of the Pitons! They looked so close together but Bumpy said they were actually 3 miles apart. We stop at the only drive-in volcano and enjoyed the brief 15 minute tour. It smelled sooooo bad.

2011%252520Cruise%252520378.JPG

A waterfall near the volcano gained global recognition by being shown in an episode of “The Bachelor”.

2011%252520Cruise%252520385.JPG

We then boarded the water taxi’s for our beach time between the Pitons. This was one of my favorite memories of this cruise. My boyfriend rented some snorkeling gear and snorkeled while I walked over to the swimming area of the beach and enjoyed the relaxing water while admiring the beautiful scenery. There are plush beach chairs that only hotel guests can use which are in front of the swimming area of the beach. But in front of the snorkeling area, Cosol Tours provides about 20 beach chairs for people to use.

2011%252520Cruise%252520405.JPG

We stayed there for about 1.5 hours and then headed back to the van. It was here that Cosol offered the group a drink made my locals. I didn’t have any but others in our group said it was really good. We also stopped at a Garden along the way.

We started to make our way back to the ship and stopped along the way to get our lunch. We stopped at the same place we ate breakfast and picked up some local cheese and then headed down a little bit further to pick up the hot, local bread. The bread was the size of the turkey leg! It was very good and everyone commented on how there was no way they were going to have room for dinner. We hit a little bit of traffic going through town but got back to the ship in plenty of time. I picked up a few souvenirs on the way through the port area. Misc facts about St. Lucia that we discovered: their favorite music is currently country music, there is little drug use.

As usual, Ketut provided excellent service at dinner and the chocolate melting cake was yummy!

Friday November 18th

When I got up today and watched us approaching St. Kitts, I tried to remember my last trip there in 2007 but apparently, that trip was uneventful. I wondered how anything could top the tour we took in St. Lucia. I had booked a tour with Royston and there were only 6 of us in all. As it turns out, all of us were on Cosol’s tour the day before but each had a different van driver. Royston wasn’t there yet but had advised all us when we booked that if he wasn’t there when he arrived, he would be shortly. He also provided us his cell phone number. We were one of the first off the ship and we waited about 10 minutes for Royston. We followed him towards the van and we proceeded on our trip that was only supposed to be 4 hours ($45). He drove through town and it was relatively quiet given the time of day. We drove away from town on a road that Royston said drove around the whole island. Our first stop was on the side of road and took me a second to realize what I was supposed to be seeing….monkeys. Apparently, monkeys first inhabited the island via the ships that brought the slaves. A few escaped and now there are just as many monkeys as people! We continued on the tour which followed the coastline stopping at various locations. Being a dog lover, I got a little depressed seeing so many homeless dogs wandering around. I wanted to take all of them home! My BF got a little hungry along the way, Royston stopped so he could get some chicken from a street vendor. My BF was the only one who was hungry (he eats like a horse) but he said the seasoning on the chicken was excellent! We proceeded towards the “Central Forest Reserve National Park.” We were the first to arrive for the day and it was so peacefully and quiet. It really made me appreciate what it must have been like 200+ years ago. Leaving the park, you encounter the largest oak tree known on the island. It’s close to the house of one of the slave masters. The tour than took us to “Brimstone Fort.” Royston paid our entrance fee and we spent about 45 minutes walking around. There were 2 archaeologists who were beginning to excavate the hospital of the fort. A map was recently discovered and it wasn’t until that map was found that they realized the location of the hospital on the fort. The hospital was located next to ammunition storage. Royston said that was due to the fact that small pox and other air born diseases would not spread if the fort was attacked b/c the ammunition storage would incinerate the hospital thereby taking care of any contamination concerns. After the fort, we continued along the coast of St. Kitts making brief stops and got more depressed with every dog I saw…lol. It was finally time for lunch and we had two options: a street vendor who offered chicken, ribs, rice, salad or a Roti. A Roti is a wrap filled with either chicken or conch, potatoes and curry. Four of us ordered the chicken and/or ribs which came with a salad and rice and the other two ordered conch roti. I ate the rice while my BF ate the ribs. It was kind of hard to eat while Royston was driving but we managed. We literally stopped in the street while Royston went into a local restaurant to get the Roti’s. We then proceeded towards a quiet beach hut that had a couple picnic tables. We finished eating there and then a couple people left to snorkel and swim. My boyfriend snorkeled but said when he saw a sting ray, bigger than he was, swimming straight towards him, he had had enough  We stayed here for an hour or so and Royston said he could continue to take us around the island or we could stay at the beach or he could take us back to the ship. We all voted to see more of the island. Remember, this tour was only supposed to be 4 hours and it was already on hour 6! Royston not only drove us all the way around the island, he took us UP the island. To some of the highest points on the island that allowed us the most picturesque scenes I had ever seen. One shot even showed a small portion of the island that had the Atlantic on one side and the Caribbean on the other side. Royston brought us back to the ship with about an hour to spare. He truly made it an unforgettable day – and for a great price, which included all drinks and lunch. I would highly recommend him for anyone wanting to see beautiful views of St. Kitts with just a brief beach stop!

We did some shopping back in port and got a couple pictures with the monkeys. I should have read what a rip off it was – I would have been better off getting a picture earlier in the tour on one of our stops where a lady had one with her.

I think St. Kitts was our favorite Island.

Saturday November 19th

Today, the island of St. Maarten awaited us. I had researched CC on things to do but the only thing I REALLY wanted to do was see Maho beach where the planes take off and land. I found an island tour than included a little beach time and a stop at Maho Beach. It was with Jo Junie tours. We were supposed to meet Jo at the pier at 9 AM. We arrived @ 8:30 and at 9 AM, Jo told us he was still awaiting a group of 4 from our ship and a couple from a German ship that wasn’t even in port yet. He also had a family of 4 awaiting him in downtown who were on the island for a week and had booked a tour with him. We patiently waited and understood that Jo needed to wait for these people - he needed the money – it’s his livelihood. I understand that..but my patience wore thin as the day grew on. The family of 4 from our ship FINALLY showed up at 9:30 and half heartedly apologized for being late. We headed towards the vans and drove into town where we picked up the other family waiting there. As if not showing up until 9:30 wasn’t rude enough, that same family insisted on sitting on two different seats in the van which then required the others who later joined to share seats with their kids aged 4 and 6. Seriously? They’re your freaking kids, you sit them! Don’t require strangers to. We then stopped at a beach area where a local brought some sea creatures out for us to hold.

2011%252520Cruise%252520557.JPG

We got a few minutes to take pictures and then back into the van. We headed towards Orient Beach and those who didn’t want to go to the beach went to the butterfly farm. Jo’s brothers have a shack at Orient Beach. For $5 per beach chair, you can rent a chair and get some beer. We were advised that we would have 1.5 hours at the beach. After an hour in the sun, we went to shack and ordered some food. It was rather expensive but the beans and rice was the best I had ever tasted!

2011%252520Cruise%252520575.JPG

After our allotted time at the beach, guess who we had to wait on? Yes, the “Late Family.” They showed up 15 minutes later. We then headed to the market downtown on the French side for some shopping. The Late Family had stated they were hungry so Jo had advised everyone that if we wanted to eat, to order it to go, and then pick it up and bring it back to the van as we only had 45 minutes to shop.

2011%252520Cruise%252520586.JPG

Ho Hum…everyone is back at the van except for whom???? Yes, the Late Family. I was really PO’D at this point. Jo had to go looking for them and finally brought them back to the van. When everyone was onboard, we headed to our final destination – Maho Beach! My one sole thing I wanted to do all day! However, due to the Late Family, instead of the normal time allotted for this stop, we only had 40 minutes. I made sure everyone in the van knew the return time was 2:10! The woman in front of me turned around and laughed. So I walked down to the fence awaiting the monster planes to land and take off. But to my disappointment, during our 40 minutes at the beach, only small and prop planes landed and took off. At 2:05 we started walking back to the van where, yes, you guessed it, we were awaiting the Late Family. While we were waiting, my boyfriend got out to take a picture saw a big plane off in the distance approaching the airport. He ran down to the fence and was able to get a video of the plane landing. I heard the plane (after it was too late of course – because I was in the van like everyone was supposed to be) and when I ran out, my boyfriend nodded to me that he had gotten it on video! As he boarded the van, still awaiting the Late Family, I heard the roar of the engines of a huge plane about to take off. I wanted to run out of the van so fast but knew that by the time I got into view of the runway, it would be too late. I was so disappointed. Why is it the ones who always follow the rules miss out and the rule breakers get rewarded. The Late Family returns talking about how awesome it was to see those planes land and take off. I started counting to 10 before I hit someone. Jo dropped some of us off in downtown to do some shopping and then we took a water taxi back to the port. I still gave Jo a nice tip despite the fact that I felt he should have done more to make sure everyone had a more enjoyable time. I do remember Jo saying that had he collected the money up front, he would have left the Late Family at one of our stops bc they returned so late at every stop, but what could he do? That was $180 he needed. Still, I felt he could have at least said something to them to make sure we stayed on schedule. I feel like I missed out on a once in a lifetime opportunity b/c who knows if I will ever be back to St. Maarten.

2011%252520Cruise%252520592.JPG

Tonight was our final evening with Ketut in the dining room. We had tipped him $10 every night we dined with him and also tipped the asst waiter and the waiter who brought out the food. I’m not sure everyone tips their “anytime dining” staff but it was well deserved. They all worked really hard.

When we returned from dinner, it was time to start packing  Our room stewards name was Hendro and he was awesome. Our room was always spotless, we always had fresh towels and he never removed or threw away anything that we might have been holding on to for souvenirs! Plus, we loved our towel animals. We seeked Hendro out Saturday night and tipped him $100! We couldn’t help but think about how many people don’t tip at all and how hard all the employees work on a cruise ship, even those unseen. The music was a little bit louder than normal this night but we finally fell asleep.

Sunday November 20th

We were staying an extra day in Puerto Rico to avoid an airport troubles. We were given #18 for disembarkation. We sat down in the theatre which was a bonus b/c they heard the #’s being called via radio before they were announced over the loud speaker on the ship so everyone got a little head start. They called our number about 9:30. We easily found our luggage and for once got in the “right” line while awaiting customs b/c we got through quickly while the other line appeared to be detained by a couple being questioned by the customs agent. We carried our luggage to an awaiting taxi and he drove us to the Doubletree. The taxi driver asked us if a lot of Hispanic people were on the ship bc very few people needed taxis. It was mostly locals who had family picking them up. He said that after he dropped us off, he was going to head over to the Pan Am pier where the Royal Caribbean “Adventure of the Seas” and Princess’ “Caribbean Princess” were docked. I had only intended to drop our luggage off b/c I figured it was too early to check in but the woman said our room was ready and we could check in right away. The only thing missing was the warm cookie….she forgot to give us one upon check-in. I was quite shocked when I got to our room and saw how modern it was. It didn’t have much of a view but I didn’t care. We changed into our swimwear and headed down to the pool. We only lasted an hour, even though it was before noon. The sun beating on you was so hot, I just couldn’t take it. We headed back up to the room, showered and headed out for lunch. I had been given two recommendations to eat at Bebo’s Café which is around the corner from the Doubletree. We ended up eating lunch, dinner and breakfast there as it was really the only place we could find close to the hotel. Food can be a little pricey and the service was a little high but overall the food was good!

Monday November 20th

We headed to the airport at 10:30 for our 1:40 flight. We did a little shopping in the duty free stores in the airport for some final stuff and then waited to board. The flight home was uneventful and we arrived home in Charlotte a half hour early. Of course, it took them 45 minutes to get us our luggage. Gotta love CLT!

Overall, we immensely enjoyed this cruise. I’m afraid I cannot really comment on the cruise ship itself since we didn’t spend a whole lot of time on it. I have learned that you should not purchase a soda card when you have a port intensive itinerary! I am a huge soda drinker and felt it was a waste since we only had one sea day. Carnival was the 4th cruise line I have been on but don’t feel I am qualified to judge them based on one cruise. I don’t know about other ships but their lack of items in their buffet was pretty much the only downfall I can really mention. The chicken tenders and pizza were very good and I never passed a cruise member who didn’t greet me with a smile followed with “Good Evening, Good Morning or Good Afternoon.” Their chocolate melting cake is the bomb as evident by the 5 pounds I gained! I would most certainly book with Carnival again.

I’m sure I have forgotten some things and rambled on about others. Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the review and great photographs. We have until Feb - 2013 before we take this same cruise but we love reading eveyones reviews whether they are good and/or bad. Thanks again. Mark

You're welcome Mark. I never realized how much work it is to try and post a review. I've been at it 13 hours between typing the review and uploading 700 pictures to Picasa and Facebook. I truly appreciate all the other reviews people have written a whole lot more now!

Have a great cruise!

You will not be disappointed. If you are going to swim, wear your suits under your clothes bc you can't change anywhere!

At the Intercontinental what type of problem did you have for we will be staying there for our pre cruise layover.Oh yes, You posted that the L shape cabin was 6224 Should that have been #6424? For we have cabin 6459 on the other side.

Yes, thank you corrections. After working on pictures and reviews for 14 hours yesterday, I don't think I proofread everything as well as I should have!

As for Royston's tour, I'm not really sure of the name of the beach. It was a small strip of beach that was really quiet and didn't not have a lot of people. I know we drove by Frigate Bay, Cockleshell and Turtle Beach (but those weren't the one we stopped at.)

We didn't try any snacks at La Bombonera - we actually ordered lunch.

And yes, it most certainly was #6424, not 6224. And I loved it!

Have a wonderful cruise!
