Things to do in Belize?

Hi - me and 7 friends are cruising in early January (OUR FIRST CRUISE) and are wondering what to do in Belize? We don't want to spend a lot of money on an excursion, but would like to relax on a local beach or maybe walk around the area and experience the culture/local food/etc.

What are the best options for this on Belize, or is it better just to stay on the cruise ship and hang out?

thanks for any help!

-Andy

We're setting sail on the Equinox on Monday and will be in Belize on Thursday.

We generally don't want to spend a lot of money on excursions either but it depends on the situation.

Based on our research, for us, the main activities we're targeting are somehow visiting the barrier reef (somewhat difficult since we're not big swimmers) and the cayes off the mainland (if you do a google search on images for these islands you see that a lot of them are beautiful). There are relatively inexpensive water taxi's that take you to some of the larger cayes. That's one of our backup plans. Our initial plan is to tender off the Equinox and just see what kind of excursions are being offered by vendors hustling for our business.

We were also looking at cave tubing, zip lining, and visiting ruins which were also appealing to us. But we're just looking to visit the cayes on this trip. There's always next time and/or we're staying flexible when we arrive.

We'll be there in a little over a month. Our plan ( wife, child (7) and I) is to do a city tour and Belikin Brewery tour. WE love seeing new places, whether they are pristine or run down, clean or dirty, old or new...plus I like beer and belikin is pretty well known. After this 3 hour tour or so we plan to have a traditional meal by walking over to Neries on Daly St. Simple day and not too expensive.

Your ship tenders you in to Belize City, and there are no beaches on the northern coast of Belize, due to the barrier reef, so to get to a beach, book an excursion. You will go to one of the outer islands.

We did Goff's Cay two years ago, but I see that that is no longer offered by Carnival. Bannister Island is a nice place to swim-have fun. Byt the way, if you have an excursion booked through your cruise ship, you will get off the ship before those who do not have a booked excursion.

Andy:

IMO, the top excursions in Belize are either snorkeling on the reef or visiting the ruins. Snorkeling, because you will see the 2nd largest barrier reef system in the world, and the the ruins because of the sense of culture and history. Don't know what your pleasures are, but Caye Caulker and San Pedro are small towns right on the reef that have mostly no paved roads and seem like relics from another world. Xanantunich and Laminai are relics from ancient Mayan days that will blow away a history buff.

We did the cave tube and Belize zoo excursion, it was really nice. Tubing is kind of adventurous and then you visit the zoo which is great and with a lot of exotic animals, some only to be seen in Belize. Was a great combo for the kids, action and education!
