che5904 Posted December 12, 2011 #52 Share Posted December 12, 2011 I was told by the TA that I booked the pearl with that if we only had 2 in the room they had to move us to a room that only had 2 beds, so that the accomodations for 3 would be avaliable for other people to book. She said that we couldnt keep the room for 3 people 'just in case' and if a 3rd person joined us later they would only be able to do so if a cabin for 3 was still avaliable. I think she was just saying that so that we wouldnt cancel. So next time I book a cruise, I am going to choose the cabin number and select a room that can accomodate more people, just in case someone decides to join me OK this is where you may run into the problem. You can book a cabin that holds 3 or 4, if there is only 2 of you. Even if the cabin says it can hold 3, doesn't necessarily mean you can add that after. If you go to add more people to your cabin later that may be an issue. It would totally depend on whether that lifeboat section is at maximum capacity or not. If it's not adding an additional person is no problem. If that section has reached capacity then you cannot add anymore people. This is what this thread is about, the OP cannot add anymore to their cabin because that section is at maximum capacity.
oldafw Posted December 12, 2011 #53 Share Posted December 12, 2011 I learn so much from reading all these boards... I booked a mini suite for myself, DH and DS. After much thought, I booked a cheap inside cabin for my son instead of him staying with us. How many people in each cabin or the consequences of all this never crossed my mind. I just figured total numbers of people.

Most times there is no need for the average cruiser to know this or even care, until you get something come up like the OP is going through and it's good information to know. groo Posted December 12, 2011 #55 Share Posted December 12, 2011 I remember reading a thread on here somewhere where a poster was trying to get the deposit amount lowered for the cruise. Someone suggested only booking two people to a room and adding the others later on.

Someone suggested only booking two people to a room and adding the others later on. I also have seen this suggested before on these boards. There is a good lesson here that you may still be closed out if the maximum # of passengers for lifeboats has been reached, even if you do have empty berths in your cabin. However, it sounds as if the OP's father waited until VERY late in the process. He must have thought it would be no problem as long as the cabin sleeps 4. bonvoyagie Posted December 12, 2011 #57 Share Posted December 12, 2011 There are two or more sets of numbers at work here - one is the maximium number of people a given room can support, the other is the total number of passengers aboard the ship and a third might be the number of people/lifeboat station. The minimum booking would be for one person (however you pay like you were two) the maximium number is when you have the entire cabin set up for sleeping. Most cabins have a max of 4 - the 3 bdr GV shows 8 As for the lifeboat regs I could not find any hard and fast number in the SOLAS regs - just that the ship must have more lifeboat capacity than the max number of pas and crew - I kept finding a 125% number as a rule of thumb. So this begs another question - how does NCL figure max cap? The ratings on their web site indicate double occupancy on the Pearl to be 2394 with a crew of 1099 for a total of 3493. The Pearl also has 20 motor life boats each has a cap of 150 for a total of 3000 - which is also the number you get when you take 2394 x 1.25 very interesting to say the least. As for the crew, they get inflatable life rafts. So does this mean that the actual pass cap on the Pearl can be as high as 3000? good question - I doubt it but you never know. I suspect that the Pearl sails with an average of 2400 pax/wk - some wks more some less. I don't believe that there are that many rooms that are filled to their max capacity on any given cruise. The last time I cruised (2006) the muster drills were held indoors instead of around the life boats - we were one of six groups that met in the dining room. The idea was to muster there and then in case of an emergency we would be escorted to a lifeboat if required. I don't remember if the muster information was permanently posted in the cabin or not, I know it was on our key cards and in the welcome aboard lit. I believe that NCL can change which rooms muster where on a cruise by cruise basis based on room occupancy. I know that the muster lists must be approved by the coast guard when a ship sails out of a US port.

time2cruise1 Posted December 12, 2011 #59 Share Posted December 12, 2011 One other factor at work. As the ship fills up NCL will stop allowing 3+ in any cabin to make sure they sell the remaining cabins. Nothing to do with lifeboats. Epic_Bear Posted December 12, 2011 #60 Share Posted December 12, 2011 Saw that there are suites listed on other websites for your cruise, just not on the NCL site.

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk - Jim I was gonna ask what happens if alot of people book 3+ in their cabin , there would be empty cabins left that slept 2 people but that couldnt be sold due to the number of people already booked. I guess it makes sence to fill the cabins with 2 people and make people book 2 cabins instead of one that holds 4. You've answered my question. thanks

You've answered my question. thanks I don't know their business philosophy when it comes to this, but something is up. For this weekend's trip on the Sun, every site known to man had no availability for three people in a cabin. Any cabin. So I called to see if NCL could do anything, and the phenomenal agent (Reggie) was able to hook me up. So there was something there, but no one out here in the real world could get to it. time2cruise1 Posted December 12, 2011 #67 Share Posted December 12, 2011 I don't get this. If it has nothing to do with the lifeboats, what is it that determines that the ship is filled up? There is still room in the lfeboats when they normally stop booking the 3 plus in a cabin. The issue is they don't want to reach target capacity with 3&4 fares and then have open cabins that could have been booked at 1&2nd passenger fares. It is a balance of revenue and passenger count.
