Amount of smoke on Carnival vs. Princess

Okay, I know there must be posts about this already, but after searching for 20 minutes, I just can't find them. My husband and I are debating between two cruises, one on Carnival Liberty, the other on Princess Crown. We aren't smokers, and my husband especially is very sensitive to smoke (headaches, etc.) How do these lines compare in how much you notice smoke, or whether or not smoking rules are obeyed? We cruised Royal Caribbean a couple years ago and didn't notice hardly any smoke. We'd also like to have some fun at night at clubs, but it seems that smoking is allowed in all dance and jazz clubs? What's left for us to do?

For the record, I realize that smokers need a place to go, I'm not trying to open up a smoker-bashing post, I just need to know what the atmosphere will be like because it might affect my booking. Thanks in advance!

Princess does not allow smoking on balconies or in the cabins.

Carnival allows you to smoke on your balcony, so if you have a balcony, now that you cannot smoke in insides and OVs and have to get a balcony, odds are higher than before imo that you will be next to a smoker if you book a balcony.

Princess allows less smoking than Carnival in this regard.... though Carnival just cut way way back.

We were on the Liberty late November. I was burned twice by our balcony neighbors...once the "cherry" blew between my toes (I had on keens), and the other time it hit the crook of my arm. At sailaway, my nose was plugging up from the smoke, so I was breathing through my mouth and I got a gulp of ashes as it blew into our balcony. We tried talking to our neighbors about the blowing ashes and embers, but they were adamant that they paid for a balcony, it was their right, yada, yada, yada. We eventually just quit going out on ours when they were there, or we went in when we heard them come out.

I have pictures (If I can get my SD card back) of a family at Guys on Lido smoking with 4 different "no smoking" table tents within 3' of them. I have another one of a guy in the casino using one of the no smoking tents as an ashtray. Smokers don't have to worry about the rules being enforced on the Liberty from what we could see.

For the most part, though, the smoking isnt too bad. Just don't hit the 5th deck (promenade) if you're sensitive, because it's pretty strong throughout the whole deck as soon as you get off the elevator.

...this is the view from our balcony most of the time we were out there...

...and no, I don't just take pictures of smokers. I am a photographer, and I took over 3000 pictures on our cruise. My best pictures are from people watching, which I enjoy doing. Out of all the pictures, I have maybe 4 or 5 of people smoking...I just thought using "no smoking" signs as an ashtray was kind of ironic and made a statement about several things.

Carnival just started a new mostly smoke free policy on December 1st, I am not a smoker so did not pay too much attention to the details, we were just on Magic last week and the only smoking I actively noticed was in the casino area, where they allow smoking in certain parts of the casino, but only for people actively playing. I think they also allow smoking on balconies, and select parts of the open decks, I did not see much smoking on deck aboard Magic though.

p.s. this is a big change from our last cruise earlier this year where smoking was allowed all over the ship and you could tell

We are smokers and abide by the rules. It was funny on our last cruise, we were outside watching a movie by the big screen tv, in the smoking section, a young couple came and sat in front of us. A few minutes later the girl turned to us and asked if this was the smoking side of the ship and we said yes. They proceeded to move over to the non smoking side of the ship. If the smoke bothers you, please educate yourself on which areas allow smoking. I find that most smokers abide by the rules on the ship.

Maybe they can be airlifted to their ship so they won't get fumes from a car in front of them.

Liberty also has no smoking on Lido, deck 9 any more due to the addition of Guy Burgers. Smokers are on deck 10 in the open elements. If that's too much for the poster, get a tent in the woods and hike there.

I would agree with you if the rules were enforced. Every time we sat at Guys to enjoy a burger we were surrounded by smokers. The rules just weren't followed or enforced.

I think maybe Carnival has just pushed the smokers too far and they are fed up. From what we saw, they're just going to smoke wherever and whenever they want regardless of anybody else.

On our balcony, the smoke was tolerable, it was the ash and embers that bothered me. Not only was I burned a couple times, but once I leaned over the balcony to wave at some friends and ended up with a gray ash line on my white shirt from the smoke that had stuck to the railing (it was a windy cruise and spray kept the railings damp).

Was I burnt badly? No...but it was painful, and choking on the ashes wasn't much fun. Granted, we were on a windy cruise so that contributed to the issue...but honestly, if I'm doing something that's causing physical injury to other passengers, shouldn't I, out of respect for others, stop?

carnival is too chicken to enforce rules. those that are bold enough to put their diapered baby in the pool, or smoke in non smoking sections, go unnoticed. nothing is ever said, even if you report them.

I have to laugh. When I saw the title of this thread, amount of smoke on Carnival vs. Princess, I thought to myself, "people are so desperate to talk about their upcoming cruise that they want to debate the amount of smoke that eminates from different cruiseline's smokestacks". OOPS, my bad!

Carnival just started a new mostly smoke free policy on December 1st,

i'm pretty sure that the only change was just to make cabins non smoking, which really didn't effect anyone but carnival. when i was in mine, i never caught anyone smoking.

but it increased the amount of smoking outdoors on the balconies.

all the other changes took place back in june, other that the stupid decision to make the entire lido deck non smoking on the liberty.

Go with Princess and sorry about the rude uneducated comments from others, these are the same people that worry about what other people wear to dinner, that meatloaf is being served , but yet they love their smoke, just uneducated so ignore their rude comments.;)

Your best bet is probably Princess for thier stricter policies.

Last week we were on the Freedom and I was suprised by the amount of smoke. Even on the smoke free side of the Lido deck, you would get the occasional whiff of smoke coming across with the wind. You could also smell it coming into the buffet at times.

Then was the time on the Serenity deck where some gal lit up where smoking isn't even allowed. You could also catch the smell drifting up from the balconies at various times regarldess of where you were on deck.

This was a 6 day cruise and I've been told the under 7 day cruises attract a different demographic and I sure did notices a "different" demographic on this particular cruise.

Thank you to those who are giving helpful feedback. To those of you instead providing sarcastic and snide comments - really? Can we please be adults? Thanks.

Oh, and I am looking for comparisons between Carnival and Princess. Enter "Princess", "Carnival" and "Smoke" in the Title Only search, and the result is 0. I do, in fact, know how to use a search engine. :)

What a snotty thing to say!! I am doing a 14 night on Freedom, an 8 and a 6 back to back, friends joining us 2nd cruise all in suites and all smokers - ALL self employed (well we are fairly wealthy - self made) and friends in the bulti $$$s, for sure we wont be looking at "demographics", just enjoy meeting GOOD people on board irrespective of race, creed, colour and how much $$$$ is in their back pocket or whether or not they hail from "shall we say middle class"... Just goes to show you, we "demographically correct" folks can drink oor booze, and smoke n oor cruise, just like ALL!!!

As for others, if you dont like it. DONT BOOK IT!!! You KNOW the rules, and if the policy doesnt suit you, then go elsewhere... right now, we CAN smoked iin lounges and on balconies and for sure we WILL do so..

I do sympathise however with the lady who was burned etc... that is NOT ON and as a smoker, I am first to open my big gub to smokers who dont respect safety and rules... I actually take a smokeless ashtray on our balcony incidentally, which has a "wet wipe" underseal to it... dont expect anyone to clean up after me, totally want to keep safe, AND believe it or not, try retain a little smoke from neighbouring properties.... (maybe thats coz Im demographically correct;)

Sorry this happened to you, seems like you were a magnet. (Yes, I'm a smoker) and did so on my balcony, but never leaning on the rail. I was lucky, the people downwind to us were rarely there, had smokers upwind, but no problem. I frequented the Guy place to see how many people utilized the space for the 18 hours the place was closed, saw no misuse of the area. I was tempted to push my luck in off hours, but didn't want to chance it. Yes, they've pushed smokers too far on Liberty, putting up 3 tiny tables on deck 10. One night it was pouring rain. Another day it was so windy they took down the table and chairs. Also dismantled these the night before coming back to Miami. Never mind the smoking lectures, is this fairness? Now you know why we get defensive about balcony smoking.

I think I went with too much defensiveness, got upset that windy, pouring rain night. Went to guest relations, they have NO complaint forms (convenient huh?, so how did they get so many from non smokers?), I was informed I could go on deck 5(?), but couldn't get the door open with the wind.

The ship had a redo, but I often felt things too tight on Lido with the new bars on each side, Guys under the cover, and all that stadium seating with metal enclosures. Would I do Liberty again, NO. I personally was not impressed, neither was my roomie (she'd been on it before the redo). I was surprised at how many others that had sailed her before said the same thing, liked the "old" Liberty.

Perhaps you can do all those things, but apparently you can't articulate with proper, correctly spelled English.

Nobody said anything about race, you just personalized a comment.
