St. Kitts Beaches

My wife and I are scheduled to sail on the Emerald Princess in April, and we need some guidance. We are avid beach lovers and would like to get some recommendations on the best beaches in St. Kitts. We would prefer white sand and with some amenities. Thanks in advance.

The best beaches that are easily accessible are south of Bassetere on the southern peninsula starting at Frigate Bay. South Frigate beach has lots of rocks since they put in an exclusive housing development about ten years ago on the heights just north of it. Last time I was there, a year ago the rocks were still there. There was a lot of rock rumble dumped into the sea during construction of that housing estate which washed up on that beach.

North Frigate beach, where the Marriott is located, is nice but the water here can be very rough with high waves since it is completely exposed on the Atlantic side. Both Frigate bay are about 10-15 minutes from Basseterre

The next nice beach 5 minutes further away, South Friar's or Shipwreck, is just beyond Timothy Hill on the south side and is much nicer and you can photograph the mongooses and monkeys that live in that area. They especially like to raid the trash barrels behind the beach huts there.

Turtle beach on the east side at the southern tip of the southern peninsula has a nice reef close to shore and a beautiful view of Nevis. Last time I was at that beach there was a troop of green Vervet monkeys that resided there and they would steal food and drinks from the outdoor restaurant tables . The restaurant had to put monkey bars on the windows of their kitchen to keep them out since they would scurry through to grab food. We use to bring bananas and peanuts there to hand feed them. We once saw one juvenile steal and drink a half full strawberry daiquiri and within a 1/2 hour there was one very drunk monkey swinging through the trees. It fell out of one tree, crashed landed on a table and scurried away to the shock of the patrons sitting there. It is definitely worth while spending time there but it is a long, 30-40 minutes taxi ride from the cruise pier in the center of Basseterre.

We are booked for a tour with Liz Pereira in Feb and were initially going to Cockleshell Beach, now we have been switched to South Friars, any feedback would be appreciated. We are looking for a nice beach & water with a place to get some food & drinks, shade is a must for my parents that are joining us!!

South Friars is a nice beach. There is a nice beach bar called Shipwreck on the far end with plenty of shade and modern restrooms. They have good food and drinks available at a resonable price. There are no beaches in St Kitts with white sand, it is mostly a darker sand color tan to black.

Thanks that is where we are scheduled to go! How far back to the pier is it?
