Car Rentals in Grand Cayman

Most of the rental places are near the airport, a short taxi or shuttle ride away. Pretty much all the major chains have an outlet there...just google your favorite and you'll likely find it.

There's a local place with an outlet across from Seven Mile Beach as well as at the airport...that's where we usually rent from. Their cars range from brand-new to total-beater, but their prices are good as is their service. Their website is www.andys.ky.

There's one other rental place close to the port area, Cayman Auto Rentals - http://www.caymanautorentals.com.ky/. We've never rented from there but it has been frequently mentioned here on CC.

If your plans rely on a rental car, your best bet is to reserve one ahead of time.

We used Cayman Auto Rentals in November 2010. No complaints, aside from the wait for picking up the car. We knew there were 5 ships in port on the day we were there though, so we brought our patience. They got through people as fast as they could and were very apologetic. We booked in advance and followed a driving tour we found on Frommer's or Fodor's. We toured the east end of the island and up to Rum Point in an attempt to avoid the crowds. Beautiful day.

How much in fees are added on to the base price of the car rental?

With Avis we took their all-inclusive cruise package. There were no additional fees, except you need to fill the tank before returning the car. I booked the smallest cheapest but they upgraded us to a slightly bigger car.

At the end they shuttled us back right to the gate at the pier. A great experience over all.

The Cayman Auto Rentals site shows there is a $9 or $16 damage waiver (price depends on deductible selected), $2 environmental fee and an $8 driving permit (same for all rental places). This is almost the same price as the Avis 'all inclusive' rate if you take the higher damage waiver amount. You can walk to Cayman from the pier. We chose them over Avis last time because they had left hand drive vehicles available.
