Craps question/advice needed

i know there will be many different thoughts on this but i value all of the opinions i will get.

 

i am a semi serious blackjack player that is looking for a little fun on the craps table. my question is this:

 

if i play the pass line with odds and place the six and eight is that an ok strategy? like BJ i know i am not guaranteed to win but i would like to give myself a decent chance(similar to basic BJ stratagy). i also want to play a little more than just the pass line.

 

i looked at the Wizard of Odds site and it doesn't look to bad. Just wanting to hear from the serious players and get their opinions.

 

when is it a good idea to press my bets on the 6 or 8. do you press your bets and if so when and why?

 

hopefully these aren't dumb questions because when i hear all the yelling at a craps table i have always wanted to join in and experience it.

 

i'm sailing on the Carnival Valor in May so i wanna practice and be ready.

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO jkirby4: I have been playing craps for more than 20 years. As you know in the game of Casino Craps there are many bets you can make. Some bets are better than others. The House will always have an edge so what you need to do is to make the bets that give the House the least edge. That is your best chance to be successful. It is easier to hopefully beat a .80%, or 1.43, or 1.5% House edge than to try to beat an 11.11% House edge.

 

What I do is never bet on the Pass Line on a Come Out roll. Then you could place a Come Bet or place the six and eight. When other shooters are going I would have one bet made until the shooter hit my number twice. Then I would make another Come Bet. After a point is made if you want to make a Pass Line bet go ahead, you have a 2-1 edge on the Come out roll. If you like to make Place Bets then place only the six and eight. The House edge is too high on the other numbers.

 

Pressing: On this topic you will get a big difference of opinions. If the shooter hits your place bets I would press after the fifth hit. Reason, make some money. Take some out. Remember, the seven has more combinations to come up than any other number. You don't want to Press and Press then the devil comes up and you get wiped out.

 

That is just my thoughts on the topic. Other people will disagree. You must make up your own mind and do what you think is right. Only you can decide that. Sometimes you will win and other times you will lose. Every craps player that is honest will tell you that. Good luck to you regardless of what strategy you finally decide to use.

Yes, you're strategy is fine and definitely avoids the many sucker bets on the craps layout. Also consider the occasional come bet, taking the free odds. Enjoy! :)

the other two posts are correct. I just want to add that when you press. Yeah, techinaclly you ARE getting "slightly better" payouts but really your just betting more money. Like the one said...take some money out...book a win. Pressing is not "bad", never is...its just expensive. Same theing with the "free odds" on the pass line. I beleive this is the only bet with no house edge, or at least the smallest...especially when you can go 10X your pass line bet...but again...its just expensive. If you a $5 or $10 bettor like me...can you put $10 on the pass line...shooter rolls a six, then "back up" your pass line bet with $50? I cant afford that, even tho thats the best thing to do. Have fun, make it last, win what you can. I know pass line only may seem dull but it lasts longer.

 

I think tother would agree with this- NEVER: play the field, BIG 6 or BIG 8 or any of those hard ways bets.

I really enjoy playing the come bet. You get free odds. I will usually play three come bets after the come out, and when you hit, go off and on. Have fun!

HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLLLLLOOOOO SunnyCosmo:The Big 6 and Big 8 bets are only for those that have been in the sun too long. That is an even money bet. If you place those numbers you get a 7-6 return. Field bets have a big advantage for the House and they are one roll bets. Hardway bets if you wish to make them use only a small portion of winnings for them. I use them for tips to dealers or other shooters who have made me some money.
