How come deposits for cruises are not lower? Make them non refundable until you hit a certain amount so that you just dont book cruises and cancel at will. Have like a credit card payment until you reach a certain point (the deposit amount now). What does everyone think?

The whole "deposits" game is something I just never understood.

My Hawaii vacations,,,, no such thing as a "deposit".

My Jamaica vacations,,, no such thing as a "deposit".

My vacations to go back home,,, no such thing as a "deposit"

Cruise vacation,,, "deposit" allowed.

It's not like the cruise vacation is any more or less expensive than my other vacations. It is a nice benefit that the cruise industry does though.

This gives the cruiselines the opportunity to invest them....it's all about the god all mighty dollar.

I think his point was those other options require full payment in advance, rather than just a small fraction of the total cost.

I understood him as I take alot of land vacations. But most people that book land vacations don't book out over a year or have the option of the early saver program. With this program, the sooner they can get your money the sooner they can invest it.

The higher deposit generates more of a committment... puts some skin in the game... for the guest.

:)

No deposit, then some people are more apt to tie up multiple cabins on multiple trips.

At least if we are looking at 2 cruises we put a deposit on both and cancel the one we don't use just before the dead line.

Also cruise lines use the average cash float to for interest etc.

a family of 4 would need 1000.00 to deposit for a cruise to go next year.

Thats a lot of put out money in the begining.

I understand about deposits-- but would like to see that people sharing a cabin will get a discounted deposit. Much easier to come up with 500. then it is for a 1000.

Does carnival ever do discounted deposits?

(i know princess does)

Nope... only for groups and then it's a bit odd...

It's kinda easy to put down a deposit for two at $500 and add the other two later. The cabin is secured and Carnival is always happy to add passengers...

Are you booking directly? The TA I use for my Jamaica and Dominican Republic trips has always allowed deposits and payments. The place we stay at in the OBX also allows deposits and payments.

I am headed to an AI in June and they have only required a small deposit.

I do agree that it is a nice benefit.

Nope... I've got a group going right now with a $25/person deposit.

What happened was that Carnival changed the way the reduced deposit is handled by the TA...
