does anyone know about getting cabin credit?

Recommended Posts

I heard you can send money in the form of cabin credit prior to cruising, so u can fill up your account with money beforehand and not have to worry about it on the ship:confused:

does anyone know about this? thank you

I already have $500 on mine for my May 8 cruise!!

Explain why you would give them your money in mid-April as opposed to putting it on a credit card and not having to pay the bill until mid to late June.

I put it on there about a month ago or more!!!!

For me...The Canadian dollar was at an all time high..so my exchange rate was exceptional..much better than it would be even now. In addition..I can charge to my account, receive billing for it and have it all paid in full prior to travelling. Kind of nice to have some of my expenditures already paid for!I also have a $125 shipboard credit on my account so I look at it that much of my cruise charges such as excursions, bar bill and extras on the ship are now taken care of and any spending money can be used on the islands.

Why ask a question like this? It certainly isn't hurting anything.

Maybe she feels better to having it on the acct and not worrying about spending it on something else or making excuses and not paying the credit card bill off when she gets it. To each his own.

My wife wonders why, when I get a phone bill for $80 or whatever, I send the phone company $400. To me paying bills is just a royal pain in the ... and if I only have to do it once every 5 months instead of every month it makes me a happy guy. After all, what am I losing at 3% interest for 5 months....$6.00?

Ask your accounting professors. A pre-paid expense is an asset, so what the heck :D

Getting back to the OP, you call the Gifts and Gear number((800) 722-5443). My partner's birthday is tomorrow and our cruise is next week. Many friends have given him shipboard credit and he will find out about this tomorrow at his birthday party.

I think a shipboard credit is wonderful.

Everytime we cruise, I start putting money into this account. For us it works great.

I don't understand why people would say why pay money before your cruise when you can just pay months after you return home. That sounds crazy to me. I figure you have to pay for your purchases on the ship, so why not pay for them in advance. It's not like you are not going to to spend the money. JMHO.

Gee its my birthday today, I wonder if anybody will put some extra money on my cabin? Wishful thinking.

We are sailing in July and for Christmas my mom and my sister put money on an account for my two daughters. It will be real nice for them to get on the ship and have some spending money already there. I believe they just called the number for gifts. I gave my mom our reservation number, but believe my sister was able to do it using our name. I think having money already on your account is a wonderful idea. Now if someone would just set one up for me:D

What a great gift! I teach preschool, and instead of the usual "end of the year gifts" like candy, note cards, or candles, I wish I could ask for shipboard credit! Maybe I'll plant a bug in the ear of my co-worker and see if she is willing to spread the word to the parents that is what I'd like, in lieu of other gifts. Since there are three of us in our cabin, they need to give the reservation number and my name, right? The three of us want to have separate shipboard accounts.

If someone wants to give you shioboard credit as a gift how do they do that? Can they call Royal Carribean and do this as a surprise?

you call the Gifts and Gear number((800) 722-5443)

They will need your cruise and names and the reservation number makes things really quick...

That's correct. I made sure folks knew it was for Michael when I called.

Pre paying just doesn't make sense to me. That's like paying your credit card statement before you make the charges.

Actually, this doesn't sound like a bad idea, but I do have one question...say I make a "pre payment" of $500, but don't spend all of it. How does the rest get credited back? If I do it with a credit card, will they refund the card?

I understand both sides. On one side you want to go with no worries. When you walk off the boat you will have a small or no balance to put onto a credit card. But the business major side of me says take the money put it into a short term CD or other vehicle and cover some more of your expenses. Maybe an excursion or two. Before you flame me that is what I did with the whole cost of the cruise not just spending $$. Either way you look at it everyone wins!:D You have to know your personality and go with it.

Thanks for the info, Schplinky. I'm sure you and Michael will have a wonderful time!! By the way, we are so jealous that your cruise is almost here!!! We will be on pins and needles waiting for the full review when you return!!!

Money tends to go right through my fingers. If I have some, I would rather put it on my shipboard account now, so it's there, and I can't spend it before the cruise. I understand you have to use a credit card, but I pay on the card right after charging on it. Makes sense to me. I have no "major business side!" LOL I'm sure my DH wishes I did!! He makes it, I spend it! LOL

You guys must also remember if you want to take cash out of your account (once on the ship) you must go to the Guest Relations desk and explain that you have a Onboard Credit and you would like to withdraw some money. Sometimes you might get somebody to tell you to go to the Casino however, you do not need to go there, again just state that you have a credit on your room and it should be no problem.

If there is money left over at the end of the cruise, the night before disembarkation, go back to the Guest Relations desk and tell them you want to clear out the account. Remember you still have one more night so you might want to allow for some extra expenses (perhaps a drink or two). If you take out all your money, whatever purchases are made after that withdraw, they will charge the balance to your credit card.

Another thing to remember, even though you have the onboard credit, when you check in they will still request a CC #. (We found this out the hard way last year when I went to get a coke sticker and they said they can't do it because no CC was on file). Anyway, I just went to the GR desk and provided my CC number.

I was not advised at check in that they still require a CC number regardless of how much of a credit you have on your account.

Hope this helps.

Maybe I'll send Royal Caribbean $2000 now. Then, when I decide to go on a cruise next year, it'll already be paid for. What the heck, make it $3000 so I'll have an onboard credit!

This argument is kind of like the ongoing income tax debate: Some people think it's great to have the government withhold extra $$ every month so they can get a big return (they see it as a savings account); others say it's better to hold onto your money as long as possible.

Because I am a disciplined saver, I fall on the keep-my-money in my own possession as long as possible category. I'll spend enough on my RC credit card to assure that I have some "free money" to put on my account, but I won't put any of my own money down ahead of time.

Why does it bother you so much that she sent money in? It's her choice. No need to be sarcastic. Are you really adding anything to the discussion, besides trying to make her feel as if she did the wrong thing?

You have a differing opinion. Why get sarcastic? To prove how witty you are?
