Overnight Steamboat Returns to Mississippi River

The Steamboat AMERICAN QUEEN arrived back on the Mississippi River yesterday February 6, 2012, and is now somewhere below New Orleans headed for "The City That Care Forgot." The last time she was in New Orleans was four years ago when the now defunct Majestic American Line returned her to the U.S. Government after MAL was unable to make payments on the vessel's mortgage. After that, she was then taken to Beaumont, Texas and placed in the Federal Government's Merchant Marine Reserve Fleet. It is rumored that the steamer will arrive later today in New Orleans, and will continue refurbishment there until her innaugural voyage in April.

Capt. Greg Brown from Great American Steamboat Co. reports in the blog on GASC's website that the boat has successfully returned from trials and has undergone U.S. Coast Guard inspection. Improvements made over the past few months had to be reviewed by the Coasties and their OK given. The clock is running and the AMERICAN QUEEN's shakedown trip with invited guests is coming soon.
