How close to sail date can you book?

Since returning from our most recent cruise I have been looking for our next trip to look forward to. DH can't seem to get excited about deciding on time of year or destination/ship. :rolleyes: I am thinking of waiting until he is really needing to get away and then making a reservation. I know the best cabins will be taken, but it might be kind of interesting to make a spur of the moment decision. How close can you get to the sail date before booking?

i booked a cruise on celebrity summit the day before...this was the beginning of 2011 so just last year...i had to have it all done by about noon. of course, no guarantee on cabin selection.....and i don't THINK i was able to check in on line....(though i was for the following 2 legs that i booked on the ship the day i boarded...:eek::o:p)

 

it was fun...and i would consider doing it again....
