Question about free wifi in some ports.

A few people have posted about free wifi in some ports (I can't remember where I saw it!). For those more technically gifted than I, can I use my internet capable cell phone or should I bring an iPad? I don't want to be charged for roaming on my phone, so I had planned to just leave it off? Thank you for any help you can give!

You should practice turning off the 3G data and roaming.

 

You should only have WIFI turned on and learn how to log into a service via the website they provide.

 

You should know how to do this before you leave. I used a tablet most of the time.

Bad Ass Coffee in the yacht basin next to the Havensight cruise port has free wifi. The place is a coffee bar ala Starbucks. See map below

All of the ports we have visited have had some kind of free wifi near the cruise dock or lighter landing. There are usually a lot of crew members at them but rarely any passengers. Anyone in this forum have experience using the hot spots?

The easiest way to do it with a phone is find out how to use 'airplane mode'. It cuts off all the signal and just leaves the phone on. You can then turn on wifi without worrying about connecting with your data in a roaming area.

I found that every margaritaville had free wifi. Get there early, find a nice spot where the signal is strong, and drink and surf.

If you have to buy something to get the free wifi, I usually find its cheaper and less stress to find a internet cafe and pay for my time online. runs $1 to $6 per hour at all the ports I have been to.

If you want to find free wifi best bet is to ask a crew member. Any one that has been on board for some time will know a place in every port to connect to internet. That is their lifeline back home.

Anyone know where free wifi is in Jamaica and Grand Cayman? There's a margaritaville in Jamaica..maybe there's one there?
