seaver Posted March 21, 2012 #1 Share Posted March 21, 2012 Looking for a great place in NYC to watch ships sail out of Bayonne, NJ. Thinking lower Manhattan or Staten Island or maybe even the on the Bridge (not sure if it has walking lanes). Any help welcome.
pjnj40 Posted March 21, 2012 #2 Share Posted March 21, 2012 Bayonne , Nj can be viewed in Lower Manhattan- South ferry. Most of Staten Island is probably out of question.(not to familiar with that location). Brooklyn is a hot spot for this along the shore of Belt Parkway(after the 65 street all the ways to Bay Parkway). There are two rest area on this stretch. One is before the bridge and the other is after Bay 8 street. The ship lean more to that side because of depth in the harbor. Don't think about the Verrazano Narrow Bridge. It just for cars, trucks and buses. If you want to say bye or waves to someone best place is 69 street pier in brooklyn. You could be standing right next to it. There are one in Nj but the distance is too far to be near the ship up close. You can see it coming out of the harbor and under the bridge, but ship will not get close to this particular spot. CarpeCerevisi Posted March 21, 2012 #5 Share Posted March 21, 2012 I think Staten Island would probably work. You can take the Staten Island Ferry (free) over from lower Manhattan and view from the ferry terminal area. This was taken from the Explorer as we sailed from Bayonne. lady_mac Posted March 21, 2012 #6 Share Posted March 21, 2012 Pedestrians are NOT allowed on the bridge. I agree with the previous posters, Belt Parkway or S.I. Ferry will be better.
LTyler Posted March 21, 2012 #7 Share Posted March 21, 2012 Brooklyn by far is the best place right off the belt parkway before the Verrazano bridge there are tons of benches and you can walk down awhile too great great view and good place to relax and get sun I've been there many times to watch her leave :)

boscobeans Posted March 21, 2012 #9 Share Posted March 21, 2012 The best area is in Brooklyn along the Belt parkway. Although it is called Plumb Beach it is not a place to take a dip. There is a turn off on the eastbound side of the parkway.. Back in the sixties it was made famous by Murray Kaufman (Murray the K) an R&R disk jockey for WINS radio. He made the area a famous place to indulge in a little romance (an urban "Lover's Lane") and named the activity "Submarine Race Watching". We used to build fires on the beach with all the driftwood that washed up on the sand.. Always had to scrape the lumps of tar (washed up crude oil) off our feet before getting back in the car. Great view of the ships and the bridge. bosco
