Sewage smell on Explorer?

Recommended Posts

I was on Explorer last year in August...I'll be on it again this year in August.

I read a few posts here about people having sewage smells in their rooms?? Is it really bad? :/ Last year I was deck 10 midship with an inside room and had no problem...this year I will be deck 9 between midship and aft with a balcony port side...anyone stayed over there recently and had a big problem? I'm so worried :/

Recently did a nine day on Explorer, it was another great cruise with a great crew, and not a single odor........:) Edited by Thetrail

Almost every cruise ship uses the same plumbing system. They are vacuum lines which are not foolproof. Every bathroom on an RCCL ship has a little placard warning cruisers to not put certain items in the toilets. We all know how everyone follows directions, right. When the vacuum lines get blocked, they back up. When that happens there is spillage and an odor. Also, these lines develop leaks just from repeated use. On a cruise in January I noticed the toilet was not functioning properly. I notified the room attendant. Maintenance was there within a half hour and working on it. They found the problem was a clog caused by a feminine hygiene product being flushed down the toilet. You can have the best system in the world but there is no fail safe system against stupidity.

We were on the Explorer a few years ago. There were two threads about awful sewage smells on OUR deck aft. Sounded like it was in our cabin. I bought all sorts of things to stop "rude" gasses from creeping into our cabin via plumbing, Lysol sprays, gloves, cleaners. I was ready for battle. (Helped that we drove and could carry all that JUNK.)

Well, you guessed it. No smell for 13 days.

We talked with some of the crew and they mentioned the curious things retrieved from the plumbing. Face cloths, teddy bears. Apparently some children are absolutely fascinated with the noisy toilets and flush all sorts of things....just to watch them disappear.

Anyway, don't jump off a bridge or loose too much sleep over it.

Spoken from experience.

Just off Explorer last week. Some tips, keep the lid on toilet closed when not in use, also close the sink drain. The sink drain does not have a big enough loop to keep water in it to keep gases from coming up. The only other sewer smell was on deck 4 under some of the big sewer pipes. And also on our port side balcony, when they were offloading sewage in port. Other than that not many bad smells other than second hand smoke (no more smoke free formal nights in casino) on Explorer but that is another issued all together.
