If you want to use public transit, you take the regional train to Rome and get off at the Roma Ostiense station, where you switch to the Roma-Lido line (direction Lido) and get off at Ostia Antica. The ruins are a short walk (follow the signs) from the train station.

You can see the map of the regional train lines here: http://atac.roma.it/files/doc.asp?r=4

Page two of this Tourist Guide attachment (from the ostia-antica.org web site) gives very specific directions on how to get there by train. http://www.ostia-antica.org/touristguide.pdf

We really enjoyed Ostia Antica...... we stayed there one night post cruise (instead of right at the airport) before our flight home.

It is quite large but very pretty with lots of trees and green. Very well manicured also. The ruins are in good shape too..... and there are a lot of them :) Very peaceful place ...... enjoy.
