Norwegian Customs

Recommended Posts

Going on a Norwegian fjord cruise from Dover. Since Norway is not part of the EU, where do we first get cleared by Norway? On our arrival at Oslo?

On our 2008 Baltics from Dover, our first port stop was Oslo and we had no added hassles or problems. Things were smooth and easy!! I don't re-call needing our passport in any of these ports, whether on the EU or not, for the Baltics. Below are a few of the great highlights to enjoy in Oslo.

THANKS! Enjoy your cruise! Terry in Ohio

This picture shows the main, historic fortress next to where many cruise ships dock in Oslo. The fortress construction started around the late 1290’s. The very interesting Norwegian Resistance museum can be visited there. Norwegian Royalty have been buried in the Royal Mausoleum in the castle. A portion of this fortress was replicated at the Norway pavilion at Disney’s Epcot Center.:

At the National Museum in Oslo, there is Munch art, including one of his two famed Scream painting that are in this Norway capital.:

Vigeland Park has a wide variety of outdoor sculptures in a super, wonderful setting that is a highlight for Oslo. There is a wide variety of art, water features, spectacular settings, etc. Its admission is free and the views and art are "priceless". It is open 24/7 so hours are not an issue.:

Here is Oslo’s City Hall exterior. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded here annually in early December. On the inside are a wide variety of interesting art and design items.:

Norway is part of Schengen so there is no passport requirements when entering Norway from another EU country but its always good to have some form of id on you.

Great Britain and Ireland is however not part of Schengen so going from or to these countries requires a passport.

Technically, you're sailing in/out of international waters, so you are actually leaving the Schengen area when you cruise. But like most cruise-friendly locations (the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, etc) the clearance process is handled by the ship and thus all but invisible to the passengers. As for Customs (vs immigration), you're correct that Since Norway is outside the EU, you clear Customs when coming from an EU country. Again, for cruise passengers, this is transparent, but if you're planning to bring excessive amounts of alcohol, cigarettes, or meat (I believe the limit is around 10kg per person) into the country, you could potentially get yourself into trouble. ;)
