Retinal Detachment - Emergency Evac and Insurance??

Recommended Posts

I have 20 day Meditteranean cruise booked - 3 different sea days.

As I read the insurance quote I have been sent for Global Alert Preferred Plus - the language reads "acute or life threatening"

A detached retina - pretty much has to be done immediately, within 24 hours at the most.

And of course, is not life threatening. However, loss of sight in one eye is not something to be taken lightly. I am unsure if it would be considered "acute" and covered.

I am making an assumption that ocular surgery of that nature is not within the scope of the ships facilities and capability.

Have never had one, but have been myopic most of my life - This came up because my brother-in-Law (same age) had one last week.

Has anyone heard of this actuallly happening while at sea on a cruise? I would think that "acute" should cover it - but the insurance company may not.

Any comments?

You'd probably be best off contacting Global Alert and get a more complete definition of "acute". To me it would mean requiring immediate medical help to prevent further loss or damage. But that's just me.

But I do have a good detached retina story. A middle aged couple (he was in his 60's, she was younger) used to escort groups for us. I went over to their house one day and he was sitting there with patches over both eyes. She told me that they were having sex and things got so boisterous that he banged his head on the head board so hard he detached both of his retinas. He was just out of the hospital after the surgery. She couldn't wait to tell all of her friends the story because she just loved telling everyone that she had actually S****** her husband blind. 100% true story -- she was hilarious to be around.

  • 3 weeks later...

We were on mediterranean cruise last May, and my husband had a retinol detachement the night before we reached Turkey. We were on the Radiance of the Seas. They were excellent! Had to have emergency surgery that afternoon and they allowed him back on the ship the next day(it was a 2 day stop) THen when we got back to ROme, he had to wait until the gas bubble went in his eye so he could fly. Our medical insurance paid for operation and our cancellation insurance (under trip interruption) covered hotel, food, cab, and flight home(as we had to miss our original flight home. So in answer to your question, you will be covered!!!:)

It is great insurance paid for your DH and hopefully he has healed well.

But, please be careful saying everyone's insurance would pay for the same treatment.

Every policy is different and each person should check with their own carrier as to what THEIR policy would cover.

Do not assume they are all the same as they are not.
