mintypixie Posted April 17, 2012 #1 Share Posted April 17, 2012 I was read some reviews of the NOS and in one they mentioned egg beater options? I am now really confused as this is not a term I have come across. I am guessing this is a UK v's US thing. So what are egg beater? Are they just whisked (beaten) eggs? are they a certain type of egg? am I asking stupid questions?
BillB48 Posted April 17, 2012 #2 Share Posted April 17, 2012 Egg Beaters are just an egg substitute, looks like a scrambled egg as opposed to just an egg white. Egg Beaters is and actual brand, but the name has almost become almost as generic as "Kleenex."
Rare NorbertsNiece Posted April 17, 2012 #3 Share Posted April 17, 2012 Thank you soooo much for asking the question. I have been wondering about this for the longest time too. So, egg beaters are not actually egg?
iheartbda Posted April 17, 2012 #4 Share Posted April 17, 2012 Thank you soooo much for asking the question. I have been wondering about this for the longest time too. So, egg beaters are not actually egg? Egg Beaters ARE eggs. They use only the whites, no yolks. A little coloring makes them yellow. The whole egg contains 5g of fat, 70 calories and a big dose of cholesterol.. The white only, Egg Beaters, still has lots of protein and little to none of the "bad" stuff. Trainman-2 Posted April 17, 2012 #5 Share Posted April 17, 2012 http://www.eggbeaters.com/ All Natural egg whites, combined with vitamins and minerals, have just 1/2 the calories of shell eggs. Clarea Posted April 17, 2012 #6 Share Posted April 17, 2012 The MDR and omelet stations in Windjammer typically give you a choice of egg beaters or plain egg whites for omelets.
Rare NorbertsNiece Posted April 17, 2012 #7 Share Posted April 17, 2012 Ok I get it now. Not a substitute but a dietary alternative. Will give them a try next time. Thanks :D

xxoocruiser Posted April 17, 2012 #9 Share Posted April 17, 2012 Egg Beaters is a brand specific product. It's not a substite rather it's an alternative. It's an all natural egg white product that has the yolks removed . It's a heart healthy option and can be made into a scambled eggs, omelets and can be used in other food preparations. More cost effective and time efficient to use in food preparation when someone wants only a egg white preparation.
BillB48 Posted April 17, 2012 #10 Share Posted April 17, 2012 If you make your "omelet" with egg beaters instead of whole eggs, all the cholesterol has been removed. Now you can be guilt free and add some of the cholesterol back in by adding cheese or meat:D!
Maybaybie10 Posted April 17, 2012 #11 Share Posted April 17, 2012 ...and to confuse you further...they are yellow when they come out of the carton! They look exactly like scrambled eggs so it makes you feel like you are eating actual scrambled "whole" eggs (with yolks), but you're really not. KuffMUp Posted April 17, 2012 #12 Share Posted April 17, 2012 sorry i'm confused now?i think an omellet is whole eggs beaten Yes an omllete is whole eggs beaten. I think they were trying to say that the option is available in the MDR and omlette station to substitute either plain egg whites or a product similar to Egg Beaters instead of whole eggs if that is what your diet allows. Ok I get it now. Not a substitute but a dietary alternative. Will give them a try next time. Thanks :D DH was trying to control his cholesterol the "natural" way without drugs (which ultimately failed). We used to cook with these. They seemed to turn "tough" very easily and while not too bad tasting don't quite taste like the "real" thing with yolks. Of course, now that we have hens and get fresh eggs, nothing commercially produced tastes anything like a home grown egg! Hmm, maybe that is the answer to critics of food in the MDR. The quality hasn't slipped it is just that the food produced commercially has no real flavor! Eat anything out of your garden or anything grown at home and you will wonder why people buy flavorless stuff at the market.

mintypixie Posted April 17, 2012 Author #14 Share Posted April 17, 2012 Thank you everyone, can I ask do they taste like 'whole' eggs? I am not sure if I will try them as the yoke id the tastiest part for me. I often leave the whites - naughty I know.
BillB48 Posted April 17, 2012 #15 Share Posted April 17, 2012 They do to me:o... but then again I only like eggs as a vehicle to add stuff to, you know cheese, veggies, grits or flour (read cake;)). So I may not really be the world's authority on eggs:).
Krazy4Kruisin' Posted April 18, 2012 #16 Share Posted April 18, 2012 I love EggBeaters. That's all I ever use now. I like to make a Greek omelet with them, putting in spinach, diced tomato, and reduced fat feta cheese. I am so used to EggBeaters, that I can't tell the difference at all between them and whole eggs.
