GoinCruisin Posted April 29, 2005 #3 Share Posted April 29, 2005 Here ya go!!!! Can I access the internet while on board? For those guests who want the option of staying connected to the everyday world, we have implemented Internet Cafes fleetwide. The Cafe is open 24-hours a day and features private workstations with the latest flat panel computer terminals. Guests will have the ability to send and receive e-mail and access Internet sites. Guests can access their home account through AOL, Hotmail, Juno or Yahoo or have the option of setting up their very own temporary account on board with our CruiseE-mail. The computers are equipped with WordPad. The Internet is accessed via satellite through a satellite modem and guests are able to surf the internet as if they were at home. Files can be downloaded as "read only" but cannot be saved, since a floppy disk cannot be inserted into the PC's. The Internet connection speed is able to connect with bursts of 2.5 megs and 128 kbps upstream. If Palm Pilots are wireless than guests can take advantage of our wireless access. Guests may bring their own personal Laptop for use on board by using our Wireless Internet Service. If the laptop is not equipped with a Wireless Internet Card, guests will need to rent one from the Internet Cafe. If the laptop is running on Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows 98 or Windows 95, software will be installed in order to run the Wireless System. This will take approximately five minutes. If the laptop is running on Windows XP, the above software is not needed. The Wireless Internet Service is compatible with a Wireless 802.11b card, which is the industry standard. Even with the wireless service, guest's personal Laptop must be used in close proximity of the Internet Cafe. It cannot be used in guest’s staterooms. Internet Cafe Price List Charges for the following services will be billed directly to guest's Sail and Sign Account as follows: A one time activation fee is $3.95. To obtain a temporary account while on board, the set-up charge is $3.95. To print information, the charge is $.50-per page. To utilize the service of the Internet Cafe, whether using a private workstation, renting a laptop or using the guest's personal laptop, the charge is: $.75-per minute. Block of Minutes (no refund for unused minutes): 3, 4 or 5 Day Cruise 30 minutes for $16.50 (.55 per minute). 60 minutes for $24.00 (.40 per minute). 7 Day Cruise or Longer 100 minutes for $55.00 (.55 per minute). 250 minutes for $100.00 (.40 per minute). To rent a Wireless Internet Card for a guest's personal laptop, the rate is $10.00 per day. To rent a Laptop, the charge is $35.00 per day; optional insurance is $10.00 per day. kbatschke Posted April 29, 2005 #5 Share Posted April 29, 2005 It depends on the ship, one ship, I believe it's the Valor, has stem to stern WIFI access. We were on the Glory last week, and the only WIFI access was from just outside (or inside of course,) the Internet Cafe. I took my WIFI notebook, but opted to just use the PC's in the Cafe. They were never very busy, and it kept me from hauling my laptop down every day to just do e-mail. I had committed to NOT VPN into the office for the week, so the Cafe's PC's were fine for web-based e-mail and surfing. I won't bother taking my laptop next time if I'm not on a ship with full WIFI coverage, one less thing to haul. One more thing; if you do take your laptop and us it to establish an account on board, you cannot use the Internet Cafe's PC's to access the same account (not exactly sure why from a technical standpoint, but that's what the Cafe manager told us.) So, be sure you are willing to take your laptop to the Cafe every time you want to check e-mail if that's the route you opt for. For us, it was pretty convenient to just bop into the Cafe anytime we were in the area and check e-mail without having to go back to the room to get the laptop. big_duck Posted April 29, 2005 #8 Share Posted April 29, 2005 Ouch!!! Yes it is expensive, but remember they have to use a very long cable. Just joking it is sattelite (which is expensive). You can keep your minutes (thus cost down), by going on line, downloading your email then going offline immediately. Prepare all your responses, go back online then upload and go offline again. Wow 6 responses in a minute. Glad to see we are all working hard this Friday afternoon. ;)
bardgal Posted April 29, 2005 #9 Share Posted April 29, 2005 Anyone get online with OSX? (ibook/powerbook - AirportExtreme) How exactly does it work? I've only done free wi/fi, and AE automatically finds the network... so what happens on Carnival's end? thanks :D
TPFilm Posted April 29, 2005 #10 Share Posted April 29, 2005 Hello fellow Mac user (I knew there had to be another one here somewhere!) I have never had any trouble getting on any wi-fi network with my Mac - iBook, 1.0 GHz G4, OS X ver 10.3.9, AirPort Extreme. In fact, I have accessed my neighbor's network across the street from my house, while in the back of my house (my Compaq had trouble detecting my network in the room next to the room that my wi-fi router is in!) I have even detected wi-fi networks in hotel rooms that were advertised as wired access only (guess I got the wi-fi from the office, three floors below!) As far as the network on the ship goes, I do not know. I am taking my iBook in September on our cruise on the Miracle. If you go before us, let me know how it went. Any other Mac users have any new to report regarding our ability to access the ship's wi-fi?

TPFilm Posted April 30, 2005 #15 Share Posted April 30, 2005 YEAH! No spyware, no viruses, turning popups off permanently with one click.... I'm a Mac Baby for sure!!!! :D Not to mention the fact that there is no dreaded blue screen problem! If a program crashes, Mac shuts it down, then automaticaly reopens it where you last saved. Doesn't freeze the entire computer! (it's really easy to switch people, I did it last August... It's easier to switch from PC to Mac than it is to decide what cruise to take! Not to mention the laptops are really cool looking... Aluminum skins for the PowerBooks, white lexan (bullet proof "glass") for the iBooks. Great features for a comparable price. Plus, you can get Apple support AND warranty repair/replacement extended to up to three years from purchase!) Looks like we have turned this into a Mac thread! :)
ms.sunburn Posted April 30, 2005 #16 Share Posted April 30, 2005 My husband and I used his Mac laptop (running OS 10.3) on our Apr.16/05 cruise on the Imagination. We didn't have a problem getting onto their wireless network. As soon as we launched our browser the sign-in page would load.

GoinCruisin Posted May 1, 2005 #19 Share Posted May 1, 2005 so my understanding is if u have a laptop with a wireless card the internet is free onboard the valor? No, you still have to connect to their network, and still have to pay for a package of minutes, or buy the time as you go....
CruiseAwayWithMe Posted May 1, 2005 #20 Share Posted May 1, 2005 I only used the internet cafe once on my cruise last time. it was for about 15 minutes to print up the airplane tickets from northwest. i only use the internet when i need too because it's vacation, i don't want to be online all the time :)
ms.sunburn Posted May 2, 2005 #21 Share Posted May 2, 2005 DOHC, I believe you may be confusing "free internet" on the Valor with complete bow to stern wireless access, meaning you don't have to be in the general vicinity of the internet cafe to use the internet on your laptop. It's definitely not free, in fact it was quite expensive and slower than a connection on land. If you're using a laptop I suggest you compose your e-mails offline and copy and paste them into your browser-based e-mail. It'll save you a lot of minutes.
