Northshorecruisers Posted May 5, 2012 #1 Share Posted May 5, 2012 Has anyone used a private tour operator in Skagway? If so, who would you recommend and for which tours?
bonvoyagie Posted May 5, 2012 #2 Share Posted May 5, 2012 I have booked with Chilkoot for a train/bus combo - so far - so good. Will let you know in about 60 days.

cjnky Posted May 6, 2012 #4 Share Posted May 6, 2012 Chilkoot charters is great - I would LOVE to take any of their tours again - great guides and SOOO much less crowded than those booked through the ships!
Linda the Book Lover Posted May 6, 2012 #5 Share Posted May 6, 2012 Once again Cruise Critic is the best source. Though our trip is a year away I am just a tad over excited and looking at various tours. Thanks for the Chilkoot charters. We wanted to do the train plus other sights and this company definitely fit the bill. bonvoyagie - I would love to hear about your trip too! Wookie01 Posted May 6, 2012 #6 Share Posted May 6, 2012 We too have been looking into a trip with Chilkoot, interested in the White Pass Summit Bus & Rail Excursion for June 2013. They have just emailed me to advise that the 2013 prices will not be set until October, but to give an idea the 2012 cost for this trip is $123 per adult. I assume that this will be in US$. Northshorecruisers Posted May 6, 2012 Author #7 Share Posted May 6, 2012 I checked out Chilkoot and think we will be booking with them. I like the idea of going 1 way by train and 1 way by bus so we have time to take pictures. Smaller group size is a big plus to us.

gene48 Posted May 10, 2012 #9 Share Posted May 10, 2012 We really enjoyed our tour with Dyea Dave in 2010.
AlanAllyn Posted May 10, 2012 #10 Share Posted May 10, 2012 Another vote for Dyea Dave. One advantage with him is that you can decide which way to go by train that morning, depending on the weather.
Momma Rene Posted May 10, 2012 #11 Share Posted May 10, 2012 We booked a private tour in skagway. Most horrible and dangerous tours! Princess cancelled their tours that day. Our tour went up the mountain in so much fog you could not see 3 feet ahead to the top. Saw a little town and a lake. Everyone in the van were very scared. The driver said she knew every curve, however when you can only see 3 feet and driving extremely slowly, who could be anything but fearful
fvarner Posted May 10, 2012 #12 Share Posted May 10, 2012 My husband and I are on the July 20 Southbound Cruise on Celebrity Millenium. We are booked with Chilkoot train up and bus back. Seems like a lot of people on CC had gone with them and had a good time.

account4fun Posted May 10, 2012 #14 Share Posted May 10, 2012 We used Becky from Beyond Skagway. She was great and really flexible! She picked us up in the morning and we headed out to the Yukon and Emerald Lake. We were able to stop and do small hikes wherever we wanted and she was really informed about the area. We were lucky enough to even participate in a native peoples totem raising ceremony which was amazing. In the afternoon she dropped us off at the airport so we could do our heli dog sledding excursion. Overall a great day and I would highly recommed her! cruisingrightalong Posted May 10, 2012 #15 Share Posted May 10, 2012 6 of us used Dyea Dave's Tours and had a great day. We did the up to the Yukon and back. Full of knowledge. One of his comments was "I don't take you where the ship says I have to take you....I take you where you need to go." Lou
Linda the Book Lover Posted May 11, 2012 #16 Share Posted May 11, 2012 Though it is a year away I can hardly wait. I decided to use Chilkoot to take the train to Canada, enjoy the dogs and a dog sled ride. I am thinking great pictures for us to share with the grandkids! cruisinnorth Posted May 12, 2012 #19 Share Posted May 12, 2012 Hi All, For those who have experienced Chilkoot Tours, what size are the buses? Are they the full blown 50 passenger tour buses or something smaller? Thanks, Dave
puhkuh Posted May 13, 2012 #20 Share Posted May 13, 2012 I am also on the verge of booking with either Dave or Chilkoot, but would like to know the approximate group size. Can anyone offer this information?
sherryf Posted May 13, 2012 #21 Share Posted May 13, 2012 We used Chilkoot 3 years ago for the train/bus combo to the Yukon. It was my husband's absolutely favorite excursion out of our 3 trips to Alaska. We hope to do it again some day. The buses are small, maybe 20 seats total? Ours wasn't completely full either. Much better than the huge buses that the cruise lines use!
cruisingrightalong Posted May 13, 2012 #22 Share Posted May 13, 2012 Dave Dyea used vans so we had 6 but it could hold possibly 10. He had 2 vans in his group but each group could decide where they wanted to go if they wanted something different. Each group was a group that was "together" from the ship. He also always has 2 vans going in case one breaks down. Not a lot of cell signal nor fix it places towards the Yukon! Lou
glassjane Posted May 13, 2012 #23 Share Posted May 13, 2012 Hi We are booked with Dyea. He has 14-20-24 people van/bus. We are booked on the 20. Who did you book with when the trip was dangerous? Jane H
