Conzumel Snorkeling

Recommended Posts

We enjoyed snorkeling at Chankanaab beach.

Have you checked the Cozumel board in the Ports of Call section?

That's where we plan on snorkeling in July. Here are a couple of links to pics of Chankanaab that were on one of the threads in the Ports of Call section:

The Columbia Reef. Did a snorkel trip there a few years ago and it was incredible. Its a good ways off shore. We went out there in a dive boat and the snorkel party and a dive master jump off and the boat leaves. Probably around 30 feet of water. We drift with the current which was around 4 knots I would guess and two and a half hours later the boat comes back and picks you up. It was the most incredible snorkel trip we have ever taken. Saw sharks and barracuda and lots of other stuff.

Last time we went to Cozumel, all of the beaches on the west side of the island were red flagged (high winds) and since most of the snorkeling tours also go from the west side, they were all cancelled. We took a taxi to the east side of Cozumel, and the water was smooth as glass (highly unusual). The beaches there were uncrowded and were perfect for snorkeling and free! We had a blast. We just asked at the taxi stand at the pier where the best place to go would be for that day for snorkeling.

I've been to Punta Sur/Faro Celerain Parque several times - including our last port visit to Cozumel. If you head straight there after leaving the ship you will beat any the crowds. There is a reef several hundred feet offshore. The water isn't deep so it isn't daunting to get out there. Drift along the length of the reef, swim back to shore, walk back up the beach, and redo it if you wish.
