Common courtesy?

Behind the times?? Or supplying a product that meets a demand??

There are more cruiseline options for non-smokers than there are for smokers...

I just don't understand the problem here... Smoking on balconies bother you? CHOOSE A CRUISELINE WITH A STRICTER SMOKING POLICY!!! This isn't rocket science folks! The answer is so simple I just don't understand why the debate continues...

The only explanation I can come up with for why some non-smoking Carnival cruisers continue to complain about this:

What you are truly upset about is that your options for a less smoky cruise typically cost more than the Carnival option... some of You are actually angry because in order to support your non-smoking principles, you would have to pay more to cruise...

It comes down to what some of you value more: less exposure to smoke on a balcony or saving some money...

The arrogance that some of you feel entitled to berate smokers for abiding by Carnivals policy because some of you chose to save money over being true to your so-called non-smoking values... That cracks me up!

There, I made some changes because many non-smokers aren't angry or feel entitled ;).

There is not reason to get mean and angry, the thread topic was about common courtesy. There are extremes on both sides... balcony chain smokers that are so bad, neighbors have difficulty going outside at all; and balcony dwellers who won't tolerate a moment of smoking. This was a good threat when it was on topic about courtesy. Just don't start off angry, make friends with your neighbor, talk about it, and compromise. I really don't like cigarette smoke, but if you are having your morning cigarette, I'll go back inside for 10 minutes. It doesn't have to be adversarial. There are still going to be some idiots who won't talk or compromise, but hopefully those are the few and the issue at hand can be more about compromising.

If you smoke on your balcony and have never had a problem, you will if your next balcony cabin is next to mine, and I or my family member has to inhale 2nd hand smoke from one of your lung cancer sticks, and you refuse to stop killing us.

Allowed or not, I don't appreciate anyone putting the health of me or my family at risk. We have a right to breathe smoke-free air, and I will not allow anyone to infringe on that.

Well bless your heart. Before reading your post I was taking into consideration what others have said about smoke when the ship is not moving. I was making a mental note that when the ship is not moving the smoke tends to be the worse since it doesn't get carried away. I always try to be a curtious smoker and decided not to smoke in port on my balcony. If i'm in a balcony beside you, however, and you come to me with that kind of attitude i'm going to quickly become a chain smoker. I might even invite other smokers onto my balcony so we can share are smoke with you.

Why not? Many laws today are now aimed at protecting the health of those that do not want to partake in a dangerous health act. Yes they do have the right to smoke, but most laws are aimed at also telling them they don't have the right to endanger others health. Cruise ships need to just ban smoking altogether except in small smoking areas away from others.

The problem with your logic is that as soon you are out in international waters our laws are null and void. Secondly there are going to be non-smokers that won't be happy until the whole ship is non-smoking. On our last cruise me and DH were in a smoking area while pulling out of port. I lit up a cigarette and a lady started waving her hand around and doing the fake coughing. I ignored her and she became more exaggerated and looked at me. I looked at her, then I looked at the cigarette snuffer, back at her, cigarette snuffer, back at her. This went on for about 20-30 seconds. I finally got fed up and blew my smoke towards her and she stomped off. If she would have just said something like "The smoke is bothering would you mind putting it out please" I would have put it out or atleast moved down wind from her. Even in smoking casinos if I sit down next to somebody I always ask if they mind me smoking. However if you are a non-smoker and going to be rude about it in a smoking section than you are not going to get much sympathy from me.

Ummm.....they tried the no smoking thing on one ship and it failed miserably so I really don't think they can do without the smokers.

I happen to be a nonsmoker but would never consider asking someone smoking on their balcony to quit - sorry, but I feel that's just wrong, just as I wouldn't ask my neighbour not to drive his car down the street because it emits deadly pollutants that could affect my health. Oh yeah, that thick black, smelly cloud that comes out of the whale tail is a whole lot more dangerous than a few wiffs of diluted cigarette smoke!!!! I think a lot of people just feel they always have to have a complaint, be it real or imagined :p

Good point about the whale tail. That diesel exhaust stinks. You never here a complaint about that.
