Touche. Although, while temporarily debilitating, there's no scientific proof my farts will contribute to any long-term, adverse health effects due to 2nd hand contact.

Not to put too fine a point on it (but I'm going to anyway as I wait for my pool to fill up;)) but as I understand it there is no scientific proof of long term adverse health effects due to 2nd hand smoke. There might be evidence to suggest it, but last I checked they are a long way away from proving it.

And in any event I doubt that 2nd hand smoke exposure in an outdoor environment has the same possible effect as 2nd hand smoke in an enclosed environment.

I have to write you a note when I want to smoke on my balcony? Smokers put up with having to get up from a bar and go up a deck or two to have a smoke, leave their friends and families, get up from their lounge chair and walk to another part of the ship to light up, and after these hassles have to put up with the fake coughers and comments of passersby the smoking areas? Like we are filthy scum.

Get over yourselves, a bit of kindness will go a long way. You can hear the cabin doors open and close very well when you are out there, if you hear me come outside chances are it is to have a smoke. That is your "note" to get up and return in 5 minutes when I am through. I would also finish up my smoke and not light another if I heard your door open and I knew it bothered you. This is accomplished by having a polite and not a condescending conversation.

All day long I am modifying my behavior in public areas to placate non smokers. I paid for an area where I do not have to be told what to do.

Sorry, but all of your so called hassles are self inflicted. You make the choice to smoke so you'll just have to put up with the inconveniences. Whine and complain all you want about it....bottom line is the majority of pax are non smokers and they just don't want to be exposed to the smoke. I also believe it's only a matter of time before cruise lines and other businesses are not willing to accomodate smokers in any way, shape or form.

Someone gets it. Cruise ship or otherwise, there's a reason why there will continue to be fewer spaces where smoking is allowed. We're heading in a direction where exposing others to cigarette smoke will be as acceptable as spreading asbestos dust or some type of dioxin around people. And well we should.

Question: If tobacco use (cigarette, cigar, pipe, etc.) is really as bad as some claim it to be, then why isn't it outright banned? I'm sure that with the right chemicals, tobacco plants worldwide could be completely obliterated, making tobacco as extinct as the dinosaurs. Or is the use of tobacco and the exposure to second-hand smoke over-exaggerated and blown (no pun intended) completely out of proportion?

And the same line of thinking goes the other way as well. No one is forced to purchase a balcony cabin on a cruise line that allows smoking on their balconies. One could purchase an inside, port hole, or ocean view cabin or cruise a line that does not allow smoking on the balcony. If second hand smoke bothers someone, they should not put themselves at risk by booking a balcony on Carnival under their current rules. Why should smokers go out of their way to accommodate non-smokers who are voluntarily putting themselves in supposed danger? As you said, whine and complain about it all you want, but you're putting yourself into supposed harm's way.

You must be kidding???? Many scientists, doctors, and grieving loved ones wish that tobacco was banished from the earth....but until the almighty dollar is not the KING it is today.....it ain't gonna happen.

And no......there is no exaggeration on the dire effects of tobacco and second hand exposure. But there is sure a LOT of denial going around though!

Ummm.....something called "big tobacco money" keeps it legal. Dont fool yourself into thinking any different.

With that said...I am a non smoker and balcony lover. Although I cant stand the stench of smokers and the smoke I respect the rules that allows them to do it on the balconies and other venues. Those that are worried about 2nd hand smoke from a few days on a cruise...get over it. Unless you are highly alergic (maybe some of you are but I'd bet most aren't) you wont suffer any adverse effects.

As I mentioned, I think smokers and their smoke have a putrid smell but if I want to sit in the casino I make the decision to tolerate it. If someones smoke on the balcony is bothering me I will go inside or put up with it. And yes to nonsmokers it is very noticeble even with the ship moving at 20 knots. This is something smokers just dont seem to understand.

The non smoking laws havent been put in place for the patrons of restaraunts and bars...they are there for the workers that are exoped OVER LONG PERIODS OF TIME....not for the few hours you are there. So it doesnt make sense to be worried about the minimal exposure on a cruise of a week or less.

20 mph + wind and you smell smoke. You have a good sniffer. :D We don't even get to smell our own smoke in that kind of wind.

It goes out and up and away.

You dont need a good sniffer. You just need one that works properly and isnt used to having smoke in it many times a day

Most smokers dont notice the smell anyway. Non smokers and especially ex smokers can pick it up easily.

But yeah 20mph wind its very brief, but for some, its enough. I deal with it as I was stupid as well at time time with smoking. I know how hard it is to quit.

so now following the rules by smoking on your balcony comes under fire again...I stayed away from commenting...not any longer

Just got off the Miracle. this month

Non smoking bars...EMPTY....most of the time except waiting for dinner

Smoking venues packed

Piano Bar...empty most nights...oh that is right now non smoking...so where are the complainers???

Lido deck smoking side ...packed...non smoking...not so much

Waiters on smoking side most of the day...hmmm..

So yes CCL is in business to make money...get over it...if they say no smoking on the ships...do you really think more non smokers will just magically appear out of no where to take our place

Non smokers have 90% of the ship ...but will not allow smokers 10%

the average wind on the ship was 20+...yeah the smoke was blowing in my face my arse

The non smokers who do nothing but whine...stop attacking smokers...we keep your cost of the cruise down...you should be thanking us!!

I don't see to that much attacking if any.

I agree. Also every cruise I have been on (last one was last summer) the piano bar was almost always empty even with smoking allowed. And the lido was packed on both sides if weather was nice.

I can't stand the smell of cigar/cigarette smoke. Everyones tolerance level for smoke is different. I detest even the slightest amount. If I ever get a balcony and have someone else fouling up the nice ocean breeze I think I'll bust out some skunk scent used for hunting and release a little of my own obnoxious fumes.

Difference is you are doing it with a purpose to bother others, they aren't. Its a byproduct of something they are allowed to do. What you propose is asinine at best and not cool at all.

BTW I am a non smoker who hates the smell of cigarette smoke as well but I believe in sharing and being civilized.

Very little difference. Many have stated they don't care that it bothers others it's "their right". I'm not disputing that fact. I'm mearly saying that if smokers are insensitive enought to the rights of non-smokers to the point that a non-smoker has to leave the balcony, the smoker should have a smell offensive enough that they should too want to leave the balcony.

Edit: I think having to inhale other's cigarette/cigar smoke is also "not cool at all" not being able to enjoy the balcony that you pay for "not cool at all" as well.

Complain to Carnival while I chain smoke 2 packs a day and invite friends over to smoke with me. ;) just teasing.

If you don't like smoking on balconies, send your complaints to Carnival. Don't ruin the smoker's day for doing something Carnival said they could do. Eventually Carnival may make the smokers go to the whale tail to smoke. Your issue is with Carnival, not the unlucky smoker who is next to you.

If you keep entering a venue that is designated as smoking, you are the one shortening your own life, not the smoker. Take responsibility for your own actions by not going where there is smoking and you won't have to see, smell, or inhale it.

Then book a line that doesn't allow smoking on the balconies. Problem solved.

I am a cigar smoker who plans on using my balcony late in the evening for this. I picked the furthest aft side cabin I could get, there is only 1 regular balcony and aft wrap behind me.

Acceptable conversation would involve what time will I be finished. Hopefully the people behind me are clubbers who wont be in anyways :P

I'm an ex smoker (I now use an e-cig) and quite honestly I can think of way more annoying balcony neighbor habits than smoking......we've had the "loud talkers" - always on their balcony talking REALLY loud, the "boom box people" - felt the need to play loud music on their balcony, the "hey neighbors" - felt it was totally acceptable to peek around and say Hi, the "take the crying baby out on the balcony" people.... Try to spend some quiet, book reading time with any of that going on  Yeah, I'll take a smoker ANY DAY!

Anyone who feels so strongly against the chance that they may be bothered by a smoking neighbor...you REALLY need to either not book a balcony or better yet, book a balcony on Celebrity. Problem solved.

Thanks for being diplomatic, however, I like my solution, thanks. Why should I go out of my way to accommodate the lifestyles of others when it infringes on mine? BTW, I like to cruise out of Galveston. I don't think there are any "non-smoking" cruise lines there. In addition, I like Carnival. I'm working to get platinum status so I'll be doing Carnival for awhile.

I have never had a balcony so I've never had to bring my stash of skunk scent. ;) I mearly was stating that I'd like to do it if I had encountered the situation of a "my smoke don't stink" type of individual.

Additionally, I don't mind if people smoke - as long as they don't exhale :D
