Cover Airline reward fares

Recommended Posts

Generally, the amount you want to cover is the fee the airline would charge to re-deposit your points if you were to cancel. While that isn't a "pre-paid, non-refundable" amount, you'd want that money in the case of a claim since it is something you'd have to pay out.

That said, e-mail your insurance provider (or prospective insurance provider) to confirm.

We will purchase our airfare with JetBlue reward points. Does this get included in the cost of prepaid charges? If not will it affect the pre-existing waiver?

Thanks.

If you paid some sort of booking fee or taxes on top of the points that would be a pre-paid, non-refundable trip cost and with some (not all) insurers 100% of the pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs have to be insured in order to be eligible for the pre-ex waiver.

If you have chosen a plan that DOES NOT require you to insure 100% of the trip cost to get the waiver then you can insure those fees or not -- up to you.

As far as adding in the possible cost of having your FF miles re-banked into your account be very sure the policy will cover that cost. Some won't under any circumstances (CSA for example) and others will only cover that under some circumstances. For example, this is from a Travelex plan:

"NOTE: If the travel supplier cancels your Covered Trip, you are covered up to $200 for the reissue fee charged by the airline for the tickets or up to $200 for the cost charged to retain your frequent flyer miles/points if you had used them to purchase the airline ticket in conjunction with this Covered Trip. You must have covered the entire cost of the Covered Trip including the airfare."

So, if YOU cancel the trip you're out of luck.

Before you add that cost into your insured trip cost (and possibly pay a higher premium) be sure to check to see if it's actually doing you any good and if the insurer actually requires it in order to be eligible for their pre-ex waiver.

Might I make a suggestion?

I just booked round trip flights for 2 people with United using points. On the screen where you choose your seats and review your booking there was a box to check for insurance.

This insurance was $15 per person and besides some medical and the usual interruption coverages, would take care of reinstating the frequent flyer points to your account if your trip is cancelled do to one of the covered reasons.

I don't know if Jet Blue or other airlines offer this insurance. It's provided by Allianz Insurance.

This is just for a weekend trip to NJ for a family celebration. If it were for a cruise or other long trip, I'd also cover us with the usual TravelEx and MedJet policies as well.
