Photo poses??

Do you really like the goofy outdated poses and backdrops used for the photos on the ships? And what's up with that damned pirate with the sword under everyones chin. If he approaches me one more time Ill scream. I think the absolute worst backdrop is the Titanic staircase. Who in the h-ll thought that was a good idea? Probably my #2 least liked backdrop is the ship itself.

A couple cruises ago I told a photographer I wanted a picture with attitude. He didn't have a clue. So I had to show him. All hubby and I did was pose back to back, him with his arms crossed and looking over his shoulder and me with a hand on my hip glancing back at him. It was the best picture we've ever had taken on a ship.

So why don't the professional photographers come up with some new ideas? Come on Carnival be creative.

And lastly do you pose and buy or just pose for the heck of it?

I'm eagerly awaiting my first cruise (coming up in 6 months) And I have to say....having a pic taken with a pirate holding his knife up to my neck sounds kinda fun! I will probably pose for lots of pics just for the heck of it, cos I enjoy doing cheezy things on vacation.

I always look forward to what I call the "vulture" pose. That's the one where the photographer manages to get me to hunch my shoulders, lean over and look down on my poor wife like I'm getting ready for a go at her neck. While we'd never buy it, we look forward to laughing at it. Every cruise, there's always at least one.

And don't get me started on the Pirates, Chickens and Mayan Princesses. :D

They seriously need to realize that the pirate is best for kids. They would probably sell more dining room photos if the Captain walked to each table and did a photo with each passenger :D .

That Titanic backdrop was not exactly my cup of tea, although I did have some photos taken using the backdrop of the beach scene. I agree, new ideas needed for backdrops. I suspect that the photographers are also on contract as the quality on some photos (same background) can vary widely.

We avoid the photographers as much as we can. We are not a photogenic couple.

We have only been on one cruise, but we mostly stayed away from them, too. We did one photo on elegant night. It was on the neon staircase on the Ecstasy and was NOT flattering. There were a few others, one when we boarded I think, plus a couple of shots in the dining room. We took a look at them on the last day and just laughed at ourselves! No way would we pay good money for those shots!

The one that got me was when the photographer on elegant night told me to put my hand in my jacket pocket. It was pounded in our heads in the Marines that you never put your hands in your pockets. I refused and he kept at me. Right when he was ready to take the picture, I took my hand back out.

Our best photos are taken by a fellow cruiser with my $89 digital...And why do the ship photographers jam up the promenade deck to where you can't even get by...I would have to say though ,for people on their first cruise, this is probably a lot of fun for them...I guess after you have seen it over and over, it just gets a little boring..

Our first cruise was our honeymoon so we did buy some photos. Had it been just another vacation I don't think we would have.

I do however always buy the embarkation photo. I love those and really don't know why. But, I have noticed that my favorite pictures I have are the ones we had strangers take of us while standing on the dock. We just find a stranger and they take our pic and we take theirs. Works just as well and much cheaper!

We were in for quite the shock with we sailed with Princes and their photos started at $29.99

Too funny- I had one photographer refuse to take our picture while I was wearing my yellow support the troops bracelet. He wanted me to take it off and went on about it. I refused. He totally changed our poses so the bracelet wouldn't be front and center. We didn't buy any of those.

Went with my bestie from HS last October and we are just hams (theatre kids) and so we loved posing for the photos. But this one time the lady photographer was trying to pose us like a couple. I say to each his own, but she shouldn't have assumed that was the case. We did get a good laugh out of it though, so no biggie:D

We have a couple nice photos from formal night, but ones taken in the dining room are never good; the photogs are in a hurry and the exposure isn't good, on top of that they usually catch me in mid-bite (they can't wait 2 seconds?).

If the same thing happened with me and my Livestrong bracelet, I would not be happy. I wear mine 24/7, even in the shower and to bed. Needless to say, if I'm wearing shorts or a dress, the bracelet is on. Haven't managed to part with it yet, lost my dad on 3-25-12, and dang if a photographer is going to make the decision for me.

Some of the best ones we did were "joking" around pics. Have one with Dh and I that we took coming out of the Casino after a couple DOD's. You can see how much fun we are having and it is one of my favorites

I've actually stopped by a lot of the backgrounds & had pictures taken, knowing I would probably not buy any of them. Only bought a couple that truly actually made me look good! I am not photogenic--AT ALL. Normally, hate all pics of me.

The funny ones---was when my cruise room mate was a friend's MIL who is old enough to be my mother but doesn't really look it. I think with the way some of the photographers tried to pose us they may have thought we were a couple (2 older women???). Felt kinda ridiculous taking the pics but they (photographers) were happy. Made for some laughs when looking at them in the photo gallery. Just before they were placed in the shredder!!!

I'm taking my sister on her 1st cruise on Dec. 2--on Breeze!--and I'm sure we'll do photos and I know already I will buy one of the 2 of us. We're getting older & since we live in different states have no opportunities to have good pics taken of us.

But it would be nice to see some new backdrops!

After a photo session on a Princess ship that went terribly wrong....DH and I each 50 at the time ended up laying on the floor with our chins in our hands, another where we were propped up against each other back to back sitting on the floor....we learned to just say NO! to certain poses that seemed absurd. I'm still mad to this day that I didn't buy those photos because I laughed until tears were running down my cheeks when I saw them, but DH was not nearly as amused.

Typically my DH and I do not like any of those. But on the Dream last summer, I said hey lets just do one, so we went to the photog, he wouldn't take our pic. It was elegant night and only those dressed up could take pics. We were a little upset, I don't know why you have to be dressed to the nines to take a pic with a backdrop behind you. There was no one else around or even waiting to have their pic taken. My DH was like really? Finally he agreed to take the pic, but by that point the moment was gone. I can take my own pics using a natural backdrop--the ocean!

So why don't the professional photographers come up with some new ideas? . . .

This probably answers your question. To think that the ship photographers are professional is probably a misnomer. They have been trained how to take pictures using the few available backdrops, but most of them have no idea how to compose a picture.

To each his own!:) My girlfriends and I purchased several really nice pics on our cruise, including one on the staircase in our formal attire. There was even a nice one of my cousin and I at dinner (which mustve been a lucky shot because those ones are often terrible.) The following cruise, my bf and I got a really nice pic together at the piano. Bfs fam usually gets a nice pic together, too, because its convenient and easy with the whole fam already together.

I think if you are searching for portrait type photos, then you are in luck. But unfortunately, fun, unusual photos are not their specialty. :p And nobody should ever make you pose in such a way that you feel uncomfortable, especially when/if you voice your opposition. The nice thing is that you always have the option to walk away, discard the photos, and never pay a cent. Or never even have the photo taken at all.

Bravo.

I wear a Tux to every formal night. (And I refuse to say Cruise Elegant.:)) One photographer told me to put my hand into my pocket. I explained one is not supposed to put hands into pockets of Tuxes so I refused. He then refused to continue to pose us. I was furious.

I spoke to the Photo Dept. head and he simply said sorry. And I mentioned it to some of the other photographers.

When we got home from that cruise I wrote a letter to Carnival suggesting they teach their photographers the correct way to pose someone in a Tux, reciting what had happened.

The next time we went on the Splendor where the above took place, two months later, they had promoted one of the other photographers up to Dept. Head. And he remembered me from the previous cruise. He also told me they gotten a copy of my letter and now the photographers were instructed to NOT tell people wearing Tuxes to put their hands into their pockets.

Apparently some whining works.

We bought some on our first cruise that turned out to be decent pics, but passed on the last one because we just weren't real happy with how they turned out. We'll take some more on our cruise this fall, it just depends on how they turn out.

That being said, I really don't see us buying any pirate/dancing girl/indian photos. I wouldn't think they would actually sell many of those, but I guess if they weren't selling, they wouldn't bother taking them.
