P&O's response to crew protest

The following article outlines the response of P&O to a protest about low wages conducted by restaurant workers on a P&O ship. I wonder how others feel about the appropriateness of the line's action and whether or not anyone thinks that RCCL would respond in similar fashion if faced with a similar complaint (protest)?

This strike happened April 2011, We were on the cruise prior to the one where they walked off, never had such surly waiters.

I can understand why the crew was upset! I hope Royal Caribbean would be more responsive to issues with the crew and respond in a more positive manner. Here's hoping anyway.

Hopefully RCL would establish a compensation environment where this type of disruptive walk-out would be unnecessary. However, if this type of disruption occurred on an RCL ship, I would expect their response to be the same as P&O.

One other thought about the article - I have to wonder about the financial condition of the P&O operation. It sounded like it went beyond being stiffed by passengers.

I think the "revised" pay arrangement shows what happens to the Pre-Paid Gratuities that most of us now pay, they are used as a control on the crew. I now understand why our stateroom staff on our recent Celeb cruise stressed so much how they would like a high quality rating for their service on the Satisfaction survey. Our stewards looked after 22 staterooms & suites, so basically if two of those cabins marked them down they would be below the 92%, using the Carnival model.

 

I think if more folk were aware that these were the conditions that the staff worked under, they might be more circumspect in some of the more trivial complaints we often see on these Boards.
