Anything to see in Whittier?

I wouldn't be in a rush to get there if you have an interest in Anchorage touring?? There is little in Whittier, with my tour recommendation the boat trips to the glaciers, superior to any viewing you have from your cruise ship. There also is kayaking, but I have not done any there.

We are arriving at Whittier via the AK RR at 1230pm and the ship doesn't leave until 900pm. I understand there isn't much offered at Whittier, so I think it'll be the perfect opportunity to get to know our ship:) . And just to relax!

If we're feeling up to it and the weather's cooperating, we're planning on hiking the Portage Pass Trail - it's apparently a mile hike or so (uphill) from the trailhead, to an overlook where you can see the Portage glacier and some nice scenery, as well as Whittier and the passage canal.

Budget Queen - are the trips to the glaciers offered by an independent agent? Our Princess brochure doesn't show any for our cruise.

Thanks for all your help!!

Yes independent, Kenai Fjords, Major Marine, Phillips all run glacier boats. Absolutely superior glacier viewing compared to your cruise ship.

We are renting a car and then driving to Whittier from Anchorage and then we are going to place the luggage with Princess and then go take a glacier tour out of Whittier, it is a smoother ride then the Kenai Fjords and the people we are with dont wish to do the Kenai and so we are opting for the Glacier tour in Whittier

Thanks - do you know any way to contact them before we get there, or are we safe in waiting until we get there and then book with them?

You need to reserve ahead, especially on a cruise day, they will be sold out.

Budget Queen - thanks again for your help. I checked out the web sites and they look great and would love to do it!! I am concerned about getting to Whittier in time, but am going to check with Princess to find out when we get to Whittier.
